Nu taxpayer in the county would he so : short-tsiji'hted, so selfish, or so indifferent as to criticize the! county going ahead with work of this kind. Rather would ; the county court be deserving of high commendation for thus , meeting an evident and important emergency, for going out of their way to do justice to an otherwise isolated county j community. j Indifference, exaggerated caution, and inelasticity of local government in such cases is far more costly than we realize. As communities and as citizens we take all prizes for incon sistency. We worry, work and hope for just sue hindu.stries as we have in our midst- To get them we offer anything and everything. When we have them or think we have, we for get about them, ignore them, and refuse to move one inch.w.r from our nosition of imauiiuirv security to coonpintp with.1'-'""1 i'-i'iniiu. ,1 i i ., ..... . ,. . . . , , , ., .... . , In -' lUiHIinim l.y C-oi-j'. Anybody can find a hundred excuses for not doing some-. ),i thing that should be done, but excuses do not build commun- ; ities or commonwealths. True community leadership and ! service are found in the citizen who is both willing and anx ious to go out of his way to do the thing that is obviously fair, just, and reasonable. Failure to handle this case more equitably is insulting to the intelligence and vision of the people of this county. Kither the people, their officials, or both are to blame, Fortunately there is still time to correct an unhappy impression, to meet a very evident public obligation. . They have voted, have taken part in com munity affairs in short, they have been for years, and still are, a definite part of the population of this county. The site of the company's manufacturing activities has moved from the immediate vicinity of La (Jrande to within a mile of the linker county line closer to linker than to La Grande. There were no permanent roads to the new town but three partially built roads: one up Catherine creek, one from Telocaset, one from Raker, Since the 'move was an nounced the importance of the need for an all-weather road from La Grande to Medical Springs has been emphasized but without result other than the county-wide road program voted on in Juno. Raker, on the other hand, viewed the Grande Ronde Lum ber company as a valuable new industry for its territory, an asset deserving intense cultivation. The linker county court' ((fHf offliail lllivl was interviewed by wide-awake citizens.
