Soft nlicat I7.4U kill. i A newspaper the other day tanied two pessimistic news 'items. One told the prophecy of certain "experts" that in only 300 years, at the present rate of increase, the population 'if Uic world will number 8,000,000,000 people, the absolute jnaximuni that can be supported on the world's surface. The oilier news item told Marshal Foch's prophecy that within ;J.r) or 20 years there will be a world war in which every coun ' try on the globe will take part. "Not only the entire manhood W the nations, but the women and children as well, will le involved." Lovers of gloom may take their choice as to which prophecy to pin their terror to. Other readers may see in the'wnr item a possible escape from the overcrowding1. 8till others will refuse to worry about either item and will realize that human genius, scorned at as it often is, may find a way out of both dilemmas one of these days. DKKSSING IT K)U THE PARTY Lh (Irande is gelling ready for the Legion convention next week in earnest. Decorations are being put on build ing. streets are flag hung--the business. area is preparing to! make the most of the crowds that will be here the last three' days of the week, combining hospitality with the natural! business that will result from such an event, j Considering the street decorations, it is probably true; that not all business houses and shops felt that they could! afford the expense of the professional decorator. That isj (Illicitly realized but all business places can, we feel sure,, take some special care in seeing that their fronts are decor-l ated, individually. Some bunting or a few flags properly hung; will help show the hospitable spirit that the entire cum-' jnuiiity feels, and the opportunity should not be overlooked.! ! Iooking at the city through the eyes of our anticipated; guests there are several spots that could put up a belter ap-j pearance, though a remedy is not hardly possible for most of them before convention time. Near the business district1 are numerous buildings, vacant lots, shacks that do not con-) tiilmte beauty nor do they add to surrounding properly, values. - ) U is, of com so, a criticism thai could be made of prac- tically eveiy town imd city but it is none the less objec tionable. Some of the old buildings have long been de-L predated out of existence but are not repaired or painted; or replaced because the owners sometimes feel the additional investment would not return the present interest earning. J'ossibly so, bill we are inclined to doubt the business sense of such a policy except vhcic capital for needed improve ment is absolutely unavailable. i There are probably numerous other things that will come lo the mind of the average citizen as he thinks of the city in lei ins of w hat iinpie.-sion the convention crowd will net. Thelo is also much to be pioud of, much that can be pointed out as advantages peculiar to l.a Grande. Certainly they far overshadow (he .shortcomings ami we'll hope that they are-oither so obvious or so enthusiastically emphasized by people of the community that the out-of-town throngs will Hot lie able lo see or lenieinber very many chances for im provement. , Without Any Warning Oik Smui.-iy muniinj?
