O THE KOAI)-IIO(J AGAIN
Automobile clubs are jreltinjr after the "road hog." The
sopVtary of one of the biggest clubs in the country pro
nounces him a serious menace to traffic, whether on city
street or country highway. He asks the police authorities
to y.age war against the "selfish ten-miles-an-hour driver who
refuses to give the other motorists a chance on the road,"
just as war is waged against the motorist who drives at an
excessive speed.
Every noimal driver knows the harm done by the stub
born fellow who insists on getting over on the left, out in the
middle of the road, and then poking along at less than the
normal traffic hpecd, refusing to budge from his place in
spite of honking horns and Uiiwl-uiit.s iiniA-ugly looks. Like
reckless speeders, they are not numerous but they nre.ciiia!ly
dangerous.
The place for such drivers, of course, is on the right, over
against the curl), wherever the road is wide enough for two
lines of traffic in each direction. If they prefer to drive in
the.middlu of the road, for any reason, when going slowly,
they should at least move over to let past them drivers who,
aiti ju more of a hurry. The traffic laws almost everywhere'
provide that a diiver must do this, when reipiested by a sig-naVti-om
a car behind, but the rule is seldom enforced.
It is not merely a matter of courtesy, but a matter of
keeping traffic moving, and a matter of safety. Any high
way will accommodate twice as many cars if none of them
block it by hogging the road. And about half the accidents,
in city and country are caused by the drivers who persit.t in
getting in the way and refuse to yield to other cars.
