H La Grande's business district at night presents a far
different appearance these days from that of a week ago.j

great many compliments both from our own citizens and from'

., Property owners who have the job of paying the cost of!
the improvement dining the next ten years are naturally:
considering the value to them in 'dollars and cents. There j
are always a few, of course, who think any improvement is:
a mjsUike and any bill too exorbitant, but it is notable in the;
street lighting district that the largest property owners arej
among the most enthusiastic believers in the advantage of
the change. It is not to be wondered at since most o them!
have become the'largest property owners by progressive in
itiative and a desire for better things. . j
Some of the pioneer business men can easily recall the.
controversy over paving streets in the business' area. They
can also remember the objections to paved and macadam
highways. Today those improvements arejpokedipon as

old-time merchant can tell you, also, of the days when kero
Beno lamps provided what was considered ample light in store
rooms, when one lone and dim bulb gave adequate illumina-j
tion in later days to window displays.
Times have changed, but wisdom and knowledge of better:
methods have brought most of the changes. The store with

ing glances that go to the properly illuminated display. Light
attracts and darkness repels. It is only natural, therefore,!
that "we should apply the same rules to a business district'
