Westinghouse company is only one among many who are
concentrating advertising expenditures in newspapers. ' In
the La Grande territory, for example, no national magazine
bas even one-third the circulation of The Observer. In Ore
gon the Ladies' Home Journal has a circulation of 32,813,
Good Housekeeping has AA1, Pictorial Review 40,650
and there are three hundred thousand families in Oregon.
More important than coverage, however, is distribution of an
advertised product. Through daily newspapers the manu
facturer can select the specific local markets where he has
dealers, merchandise ' in stock. Intensive cultivation of
those markets without waste circulation- is therefore pos
sible. More and more national advertisers are taking ad
vantage of their newspaper oppoitunity. In 1920 manu
facturers alone (no retail advertising included) spent $235,-
000,000 in newspaper advertising many times the amount
spent in any other form of advertising. This total, and the
fact that it is being increased in the 1927 program, is .addi
tional evidence that newspaper advertising carefully planned
and intelligently executed can and does bring wide benefits to
seller and buyer alike.
