STARTING WITH THE GOVERNMENT Just why the United States government should be- not only a distributing but a collecting agency for the sale of pistols to irresponsible pei-sons is one of those anachronisms so puzzling to the lay mind. Under existing laws all a crim inal iieeils lo do is to write the nearest mail-order house to receive a pistol hy return post, lie does not even have to inclose money; the postman on his rounds will attend to that detail when he delivers the weapon. State laws regulating the sale of pistols mean little. Even though all other chan nels be closed, the criminal can get his murderous instru ment through the aid of his kindly government. l!ut even such good things as this must sometime come to an end. The House of Representatives, stirred by the rising tide of crime, has at last passed a bill barring pistols from the mails. That bill is now before the Senate. With two months still ahead of Congress, there is little reason why the bill should not be enacted into law.- Dearborn Independent. Such federal legislation is (the only means by which promiscuous selling of firearms can Ik; reasonably retarded. With government restriction on this traffic it will be pos sible for the states to enact legislation in cooperation. With out it the states are helpless. There has leen much talk ill recent years uf firearm regulation within various states, the ultimate object being registration of pistols and guns of various kinds as a guard against crime. It is generally contended that the unarmed criminal is often too much of a coward to be dangerous. At least it is an experiment worth trying.
