Newlin Book & Stationery Co. .SPREADING SEAPORT TRAFFIC The Van Sweringen brothcis, the spectacular young rail road magnates who have built up a fourth great trunk line system between the Mississippi valley and the Atlantic coast to compete with the Pennsylvania, New York Central and Baltimore and Ohio, are now reported to be dropping the Erie from their plan. This is due to compulsion rather than design, lcing intended to disarm serious opposition, and especially to appease disgruntled Chesapeake & Ohio in vestors. The result, however, is none the less interesting for this reason. It means evidently that; the scahoawl outlet of the great Hew system will lie transferred finni New York to .Newport fi News, Va., at the mouth of Chesapeake I'.ay. Such a de velopment, while naturally disliked by'.iNew York City, is probably a good thing for the country. It means a con siderable step towaid decentralizing the. seaboard traffic and distributing it among the other Atlantic coast seaports. Rail roads and ships may meet naturally at many points besides the metiox)lis. New York, with its unequalled situation and facilities, may lie expected to hold first place among American seaports, but it need not dominate the situation as it has done in the past.
