But after an after noon spent in watching such a movie as Ben Hur, or an evening over any book dealing with the history of the past few thousand years m any vital or picturesque manner, one acquires a different point of view. True, our machinery is clumsy; but would we, any of us, voluntarily, exchange our clumsiness for the so-called Jtoman efficiency, if with it we had to take Roman intoler ance and cruelty? Perhaps n great ruler here and there has kiyen more encouragement to art and handicrafts in one reign than democracy in centuries. But would we exchange our slow cultural growth for Medieval tortures? The glory that was Greece was built over a foundation of slavery, whose "inside story" people of today would allow no news paper to print. We make mistakes. We are stupid. But we move. We muddle through. And every move, slow, dragging though it be, is in the direction of greater comfort and growth for humanity as a whole. , When these criticisms are made upon democracy one is sometimes led to wonder if it is not democracy itself that brings them to pass. Is it not the higher level of education, the greater sense of leisure which permits, if for u moment only, the straightening of tho back and the lifting of the head is it not, in a word," the higher standards which through democracy we have acquired, that makes us scrutin ize so closely our democracy and demand of it so much more than it has already given?
