Jim. 2:1: 1 -I. A Rich "Nun' MUM I JT J Tomorrow is the last day to register for the November election. Hooks will be down town this evening- and. tomor row evening Tor the convenience of citizens who haven't been able to iiet to the court house. . Don't fail to register if you htiven't already done sothe measures will affect you and your prosperity the candidates will work for or-against your best interests. How many of the nineteen measures on the coming elec tion ballot c:m the average citizen of "Oregon name? And how many can he or she describe as to provisions and objects? Not one poison in ten of. voting age can talk intelligently about fifty per cent of the measures yet Home two hundred thousand votes will he cast on them just the same. The pamphlet giving the various bills and the arguments for each has been mailed to all registered voters. The duty of citizen ship is to vote but it is also to vote with some knowledge of the merits of measures and candidates. The La Grande aimory can be assured more positively by providing our share of the cost of the building than by any other activity. If our representatives in the legislature can go lofore that body and state that La Grande has already raised its half of tho money, it will constitute the greatest influence possible in favor of the armory bill. The need and tlie advantage's of the aimory are recognized. The heaviest taxpayers in the city appeared in favor of putting the bond ing measure on our ballot in November. It will not be a heavy load and should win by a substantial majority. iy im. i-'nT:i)KitirK'fHTjtr'Kr;K 1 In nIT,.thfit.thft .human body 'nwiy )r lu (H-rtVot lu ullh;uii t 1U iirviitlon,-IUf-KL-n,nrviu ( I"hii ant!' iiiiihciiIim; nyHioni. xyr I elm iM.j(liwlulMy .mwWsary. The powers of some of the eastern countries seem definitely on the wane, their best having come and none apes aivo, though they may see much new and (rood yet. . lint Russia is a child with its (srowth and life all he fore it. When one considers what electric power has done for America, in the way of industrial and cultural development, the possibilities afforded by a great hydro development for Russia make one (;asp. l.ij-ht to woik by, lijrht to read by, power to make wheels (to around, releasing human energy from sudden drudgery to skilled labor that is the prospect in store for Russia. The old folks may resist the new things, may never understand what is going on. liut their childi-en will take the new power as a matter of course, build their lives in it, glow, think, find happiness. Says the New York World: "To bring the Russian people into contact with the rest of the world through the medium of an expanding commerce will prove the most effective anti dote to the fantastic teachings of the Kolshevist leaders." And as a matter of fact, the extreme teachings of Ixilshevism have ulivady given way bel'oiv the needs of commeive. The government is settling down into a surprising stability. If this Auieiican hydro project goes through, it menus an enormous gain in all directions for Russia. And it means that theie will be more and more American engineering projects theie with their accompanying benefits. More than all else it means the awakening of the H'asant to the modern world. whis to now; . iikui.in;; (A-ni-niirttii,- ,nm winter xrttbou moderns ffc'rmun lihyii hVjiB will )A ili,.lr.
