"A friend told mo about Tanlac : of hcuring I. K, PiiUeram toll what ho would do as governor there was nothing said that would indicate the existence of i man by the name of Stanl'ield. That would not mean every voter present was a Steiwer supporter but at least any Stanficld men know that silence is golden under such circumstances. Visitors from Wallowa county predicted that that section would turn in a creditable majority for the republican ticket straight down the line. Certainly Stanficld is not gaining much ground in his capacity as an independent and you have difficulty finding anyone who thinks ho has a chance to help Haney, let alone aid himself. FLORIDA'S DISASTER Tho story of the Florida disaster in which hundreds of dead, thousands of homeless, and millions in-properly dam-! ago were left in the wake of a hurricane cannot bo read without experiencing a sensation of terror. Cities that were' looked upon a few days ago as the ideal playground and re-j sort of the world have been tinned into chaos. Palatial! homes and pleasure boats that were the wonder of natives! and visitors alike have become crumbling ruins and crushed; wrecks. And thousands of happy people, busy with work orj : play, confident that they were residents of the most charm-j Ing spot on the earth, have been made homeless, penniless,! , and bereaved with the loss of those held most dear. As yotlj consider the sorrowful plight of Florida there is recalled the floods and cyclones of the Middle West, the quakes of Cali fornia, the extremes of Nature affecting nearly every section and robbing it of that characteristic, called perfection. It is difficult to attain. Here in the Pacific Northwest people contend perfection is must nearly reached in all those things making for contentment.- Perhaps they are right. Certain ly it is here in sufficient measure that thousands would be glad to give their sympathy and their means lo aid those un fortunate residents of Florida's east coast who have been left de.iolate. was orfli-lally iiniuiiini-i-fl tmlay. who make tlii-lr first iippenrj-nt'i on the AiiH-rU-aii Kc-i'i-t-n In this picture. liiKrain Is also to In- i-on-gratulati-d In his si-h-i-llou or sm-li a well lialaiHM-il and capabU- rsisl.
