Kx. 40: sr A USE FOR JUNKED CARS. There is now nn answer for the jokers who wonder what becomes of old automobiles the ones that are too far gone ;for the . "used car" market. .Pierre, S. D., has solved a problem and answered the question by using these decrepit candidates for the junk pile to help build protective works .igainst the treacherous Missouri river. , ( ; Pierre has always had to fight the river, which has a .habit, of changing. its channels erratically and wiping out large areas of city-front land. The war department said the city authorities could build dikes or walls or whatever they needed, but tho expense of such undertakings has de layed them. Now a trial wing dam has lcen built, using junked motor cars to start with. They were placed along the mud flats, where they settled themselves rather firmly and encouraged a considerable deposit of nice, rich river sediment. Within, it short lime, according to glowing reports, "a new shore .line was in the making", und. the battered remnants of un wanted cars have been given a final opportunity to servj the conimiiiiity, thus illustrating some profound philosophy kl WtW to 'OUJJJUU'. i :. i. ,v : . CITY WELCOMES REALTORS. . Today the people of La Grande are hosts to the realtors .of the Northwest Idaho, Montana, Washington, Uritish Columbia and Oregon in their annual convention. Never . before in the history of the city have we entertained so important a group of business men and never lefore have we had such an opportunity to advantageously acquaint valued visitors with the beauties and superiorities of tho CJrandc Rondo Valley and Eastern Oregon. " With this thought especially in mind, The Observer re grets exceedingly that confusion yesterday afternoon and evening in housing th arriving delegates resulted in so much inconvenience 'and disappointment. There was no excuse for such a condition. Reservations had been made jind should have been honored. The blame does not rest on the shoulders of any one individual. Lack of co-ordination of effort and of a close cheek on conditions just prior to the convention resulted in the mix-up. We regret it be cause too frequently first impressions are lasting impres pions, but fortunately tho visiting realtors and their wives are good sports and can be counted on to overlook the dif ficulty. They have traveled and convened before and they are quick to realize that mistakes happen in the best of regulated families or communities. Housing arrangements have lieon readjusted today and, we hope, everyone is happy again after a night's rest and vill be comfortably cared for during the balance of tlu Week. La Grande wants the realtors to have a good time. Every effort is being made to see that they have it. Any discrepancies that may appear are not due to a lack of in terest nor to, a lack of sincere hospitality. And there nr; many good things offered by La Grande and the Grand". Ronde and Wallowa valleys that will compensate for the convention's coming here. Residents of these vnlieys think there is no place in the Northwest so beautiful and so ideal fur satisfied living. And there is reason for their enthusiasm that will become apparent to the city's guests in tho next few days. Kin-' farming land where small grains and alfalfa flourish each year; unexcelled orchards that produce choicest apples, cherries, peal's, prunes; fertile gardens where varied crops of berries and vegetables art' abundant and all this sur rounded by timber-clad mountains rich in natural resoui'ccs imd scenic splendor to invite the vacationist and sportsman. Wc hope that the realtors will have a full opportunity to see the wonders that are peculiar to this section of Ore gon, that they may stay long enough to know La Grande und the Grande Rondo Valley as it is known by our citi zens. And we hope the impivssions they carry away are such that they will wish to return again and again. It is a pleasure to have them with us now and it would be n great pleasure to have them return.
