You One of these duys the state highway commission will weaken and extend the Wallowa highway from Joseph mound the lake. It is an improvement that would sei-ve thousands of motorists each season. . A local business man tells us that he has alrendy pro vided help in his home for next week so that his wife may be free to attend all sessions of our Home-Makers Insti tute. He has evidently studied the program and appre ciates the excellence of talent that will be available. The two-day vacation provided by the Fourth was a sane and pleasant occasion in every way if the small num ler of accidents and injuries is an indication of enjoyment. Contrary to expectations and to the usual holiday reports, motorists drove with admirable care, small boys set off fire crackers with particular caution, and everything in conr section with the Fourth seemed sensible and Jiappy except me temperature. Enterprise is credited with a verv RiirroHfifiil nun! will , organized celebration for the national holiday. It is as one would expect from a thriving, wide-awake little city such as Enterprise is. The streets were decorated as elaborately ana auracuveiy as any city could do and indicated the ri a. 1 i .... . . eiiun ana eninusmsm that was being put into the celebra tion program. The citizens who made the event possible dc.sei've general congratulations. ,, People who saw the new addition to the Wallowa Won derland hotel for the first time over the week-end are ex tremely complimentary. The enlarged building, with at tractive and comfortable lounge to provide a pleasant re sort center, is most creditable and is an important step in the gradual development of the resort to one that will draw visitora from all parts of the country. With the addition of a golf course and other improvements the Wonderland will liecome one of the most ideal vacation spots of the Northwest. It is enjoying an increased patronage every year and Mr. McPherson has verything organized most creditably. The resorts means much to Union and Wal lowa counties and will liecome increasingly valuable to this section in future yeai-s. WET TALK, DRY VOTES The liquor situation in this country at present is ob viously confusing. It is difficult to get n line on actual public sentiment. There is no question about how a lot of wets feel, and how a lot of diys feel ; but how does the majority feel? , There are signs worth studying, which may possibly sug gest an answer, recent proceedings in congress, for example. There has been a vast amount of wet talk in both houses. Senate committees have acted as if they believed every citizen with di-y sentiments was a traitor to his country. There was a lot of talk in the house favoring liberalization of the present diy laws. Yet when the matter came to- n hhown-down the other day, the wets only mustered S3 votes to the drys' 240. Those laws' will stay unlibemlized, as fai ns the congressmen are concerned. And congressmen al ways have their ears to the ground. That raises the question whether the countiy as a whole, after Jill its wet tiilk, would vote diy. Not in the same proportion, surely. Hut an election turning on the liquor question might surprise many who think the nation is rushing back to booze. The wets do more talking than the drys, and there is many a husband and father who, like some of those congressmen, after all his wet talk, votes dry when the test comes. Meanwhile, the federal government is starting iU big gest dry-cleaning program. Much will depend on the re sult of the new drive by Lincoln Andrews' prohibition army f 4,000 men, with $29,000,000 in the war chest.
