OUR FORESTS ON FIRE
- Hie beautiful and irreplaceable Sequoia national forest
in California is menaced by severe forest fires- Some of
! these were caused by lightning, striking at a time of low
humidity mid hot night winds. But the largest one was
i started by a cigar carelessly thrown on a roadway. This
i conflagration burned an area two miles wide and three
i miles long. Two hundred men fought the blaze for a
whole day.
For the last several days The Observer has rt ported
many forest fires and thero are likely to be many other
such reports during the next six months. Careless motor
ists or campers or hikers will throw away burning matches,
cigarets and cigars, or they will leave burning camp fires.
As a result of such carelessness, large areas of valuable
timber will be destroyed. Other property will be damaged
mid perhaps human lives will be lost.
The forests belong to the people and this is the time of
year when ever citizen should resolve most earuost.lv to be

our forests.
