avoiding strenuous, heart-breaking physical contests. The
competitive system is bad enough for young men, as peo
ple everywhere are beginning to recognize. -It, is still worse
for young women. The athletic ideal of the future may be
simply enough pleasant and wholesome exorcise to keep the
boy or girl, or man or woman, in good health and tho full
use of noimai physical powers.

terest has been manifest from all Eastern Oregon, and:

VWho knows but there will be a clamoring for member
eh,ip in this worthy . Union county aggregation of stock en
thusiasts from Seattle. Portland, Utah, Colorado, Montana,
Wyoming, California, Arizona, Nevada and even Canadian
points? ,
..It behooves the "residents and citizens of this county,
therefore, to sot the example for stuck funcicro of those
other states, if wo want to make the Union Livo Stock show
one of the biggest annual events in the west. And we can.
Union county as a whole must get behind this project. We
riiust show the west, and particularly the northwest still
more particularly Eastern Oregonthat Union" county is
backing the show to a man. The records of, the secretary
of the association should be open to outside interested par
ties. But, first of all. those books must show that Union
county citizenry is solidly sold on the idea.
'Aside from the. meritorious aspect, there Is'a selfish
motive which may, in these times when a dollar still only
;jeeiiis to go as far as fifty cents used to go. religiously
impel us in taking out memberships. That is the claim
of-the board of directors of the shuw that if one lives two
years after taking out a life membership, one will "beat"
the cost of the membership us a result of the free admis
sions accorded mcmbei's or stockholders. In other words i
one would have one's money back in value i-eceived, assum
ing that one would attend the stock show anyway. The
profit to the county in publicity, in better stock, and bene
fit to our boys and girls through the calf and pig clubs,
makes this a movement worthy of gracious consideration.
