This sounds a bit odd until explained further. The
i European people need to build up their homo industries
t and to save intelligently in order to restore financial sound
ness in their various countries. The United States builds
up its home industries by spending intelligently, of course,
; not recklessly and also provides a market for European J
goods. The restoration of stabilized conditions abroad re-
quires the export of goods. ,
In other words, America, having most of the cash in
. the world, should spend it generously enough to support
; both home and foreign industries. And the odd thing about
i this theory is that, within reasonable limits, it is probably
correct If the things'we spend our money for are worth
, what we pay for themriiqualityand in usefulness,: es
5 the tic or practical the money will.be, well spent and will
be productive, even as the British- banker suggests. For
tunate America is -well enough off to. spend and save at
the same time. ,
