What a lonjr way the world has come since good folks
were horrified by' "September Mom."
r While the agitation is going on in favor of paving the
Old Oregon Trail from Ontario to The Dalles, why not
broadcast to the Easterners-headed-West that , the pioneer
trail between the two cities named is an nlmost glass-smooth
oiled road nearly all the way ? The Old Oregon Trail makes
as fine a road to travel over right now as would the finest
of pavement.
When "Votes for Women" still was a slogan, the male
hportsman managed to keep his wife in a class with the
children, so far as fishing without a license was concerned.
Now that Milady votes on what is to be what, however,
. mere man in Oregon is beginning to retaliate. Two years
ago the Oregon legislature enacted a license law for women
and now state game wardens have been instructed from
Tortland headquarters to be lenient no longer with women
who fish without a license. Accordingly a Seaside woman
lias been fined $25 for angling without the necessary
papers. . '
7 THE RUN-AWAY SEASON.
. Count among the sure-enough signs of spring the
youngster from Churchill, Conn., who started forth the
other day for the great and glorious west and the adven
tures he believed it held for an ambitious, courageous and
romantic youth. What if he did get only as far as New
York city, where a heartless Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children turned him about and set him safely
back iii his father's house? lie had done his part to an
swer the call most people hear at least once. ;
Probably it would never do in this work-a-day world
for everybody with a touch of wanderlust to drop all re
sponsibilities and go on the quest of adventure. But the
feel of that wanderlust is a genuine pleasure. It is a sure
sign of age in spirit, if not in body, when we cease to have
occasional day-dreams of the ojn road. Here in Oregon
the dreams cannot be of the "wild and wooly" west be
cause we know it exists no more. Hut the urge is ever
present.
..Why not adapt the feeling to possibilities? Cut out some
lioring social function or neglect some family duty one of
these fine spring days and make a dash not for foreign
lands and scenes but for the nearest mountain wilds or
for the woods and fields that lie not far beyond the city
limits. Have a grand tramp and holiday of idleness that
does you as much good as a spring tonic. Then let the
S. P. C; C. of your intelligence turn you back at a judicious
moment to the duties from which you fled. They won't
seem quite so distasteful as they did before the harmless
escapade.
