: After all, the reaJ truth of the matter is that our tax
i problem is not down at Salem, at all. It is right here in i
Union county. It is at the courthouse, at the city hall, at
the school house. There can be found the officials who

taxes. And a thorough investigation of their activities
Unds to prove that they do a pretty good job of it, per-
;haps as good or better than some of the rest of us' might
do under similar circumstances. They spend money for
county government because we have to have one; They spend
money for schools lecause we have voted to have these
tchools; they spend money for police and fire protection,
for city government and city conveniences because we have
insisted on those very things at the polls. The 85 per cent
cf our taxes that they handle represents a tremendous sum
of money but it is a tremendous task to figure out where
a saving could I made with the approval of a majority of'
our citizenship that would amount to anything for the in- j
dividual taxpayer. So we will probably go right along with j
about the same tax burden as at present. Fortunate, in- I
deed, will we be if it can be kept within present bounds.

lated all or our schools, all our good roads, all our city gov
ernments, all our police and lire departments, and all our
county courts out of existence, or initially so, but that's
about ,the only loophole available. Or they might nlmlish
iill property taxes completely and devise some social scheme
t-o that someone other than the property owner in Union
county coughs up enough to run our schools, build our
