Looking toward world peace the nations of the world are
coming to a period of introspection. They are asking them
selves if they are fit for world peace.
The people of the United States since the World wan
have spoken much of the quarrelsome and violent Europeans
and of , the impossibility of peace with such noisy neigh
bors ' Perhaps tho Europeans have had some justification
for viewing us in much the same manner. Our effort
should be not so much the attainment of the perfection
of peace so much as the approach to that attainment.

Kansas winds are over a menace to Kansas wheat. In
the, western portion of the state the strong winds often
blow the wheal out of t ho ground. Some ingenious farmer;!
jiave qvolvod a preventative measure which it is hoped will
remove , the threat. Their method is to plant, between the
wheat drills, rows of kafir as a windbreak and snow "fence."
The plan promises to save millions for wheat growera and
lias already afforded an opportunity for a 'Kansas newspaper
o drive homo a political lesson out of an everyday experi
ence. The paper's comment on the kafir scheme in part was:
"This is a curious way to meet their trouble. Why not
;sk for a special session of tlif? legislature to pass a law
against tho high winds' Or, better still, why not. clap on
it prohibitive taiiTf and shut the winds out of the United
States altogether'.' Surely the Kansas fanner is not going
to take his licking lying down. Isn't lie going to demand
that the government 'tin something? Is the Kansas farmer
losing his cud, his kick and his cunning nil ut once, nnd
that just before a congressional election '.'"
.. This rare bit of journalistic satire is the more signifi
cant because its author was formerly a progressive who
once enthusiastically rushed with the crowd to Washington
for congressional cure-alls for the country's ills and ailments.
Equally impossible things have been advocated by the
self-styled progressives, anil witli such frequency that they
have almost made "progressive" the name of one who be
lieves in the omnipotence of legislation.
