The progress of the city's .deep well is a matter of great
importance to the people of La Grande and is being-, watched
accordingly. If successful in supplying- an additional two
million gallon supply, it will mean adequate water for the
city next summer for the first time in years. At best it
1s a temporary measure. La Grande will have to go else
where for water within the next few years without a doubt,
if a normal population growth continues. We may as well
prepare oui-selves for the expense that will accompany such
an improvement.

Wha'vrver its future may be. America is willing to try
the World Court. It is overwhelmingly favored in this
country, as indicated by the senate vole, not because it is
considered ideal or final, but because it is a step in the
direction of peace and justice between nations. No one
"ill predict that it will .prevent wars or change selfish na
tions into pure altruists. We have courts in this country
and yet suffer under crime, greed, and hate. There will
always bo nations, as there are individuals, who will defy
law and the majority.' The World Court will seek merely
to reduce that number to the minimum as the League of
Nations seeks to promote fellowship, understanding, and
helpfulness. Neither of these agencies will .solve the prol
lem of the world, but if they succeed in making it a bit
more simple they will prove themselves worth while.
