Proverbs 2: la. .The Shenandoah investigation is closed. The Ixtard heard testimony lelating to all details of the hiff ship and its operation. There were charges and counter charges. And about the only undisputed feature brought out is that the ship was wrecked. Isn't that a rather common out come for a government investigation? Here it is, almost the first of a new year and La Grande is still minus adequate street lighting in the business dis trict (and in the residential district, for that matter). If an altered city charter is necessary to get the proper im provement district formed, the question should go cyi the ballot at the first election possible. Getting the lights is liot going to be a difficult task nor an expensive luxury, but "letting George do if will put us in the same spot a year from now. Another matter of equal impoilance is the extension of the corporate limits of the city, which should also be voted on at the first opportunity. MORE MOTOR CARS. In the year now closing more motor vehicles have been made and sold than in any previous twelvemonth yet the demand appears in no way satisfied. Manufacturers -tire planning for a greater output next year. Observation might seem to indicate that the country is pretty thoroughly motorized, but a more accurate test is the manner in which; the new production is absorbed. There have Ijcen pessimists I who . have warned of over-production. There have been I lulls at times but the general trend has been in the direc-j tion of wider and wider ownership. Until every family that I wants a car and can find the means to get it is supplied the domestic market will not settle down to a replacement basis. Cuts in the prices of some popular cars are promised as a feature of the new year. The cheaper the cans nalur-j ally the' more of them will be sold. Moreover, the terms! on which cars can be bouglit have stimulated sales in-! finitely lc.vond what they would have been had the busi-j ness lcen kept on a cash basis. Diaiies and other documents of the sixteenth and seven teenth centuries show that thin generation inhnited the book of etiquette and the temptation to ridicule the rules f etiquette and table manners and those who observe them religiously. From a look published in 1 (WJ.'l are taken these lules governing the conduct of a lady at the festive boaid: "A gentlewoman being at table abroad or at home must observe to keep her body straight, and lean not by any means upon her elbows nor by ravenous gesture discover a voracious appetite. Talke not when you have meate in your mouth; and do not smacke like a pig nor eat speene meat so hot that tears stand in your eyes.' For lover of the wassail bowl and the master of Jiis house this seventeenth century prototype of the hook of etiquette offers these instructions; "It is very uneourtly to drink so larye a draught that your breath is almost gone, and you ,ne forced to blow Ktrongly to recover yourself. Throwing down your liquor as into a funnel is an action fitter for a juggler than a gen tlewoman. In carving at your own table distribute the lest pieces first, and it will appear very decent to us a fork; ko touch no meat without it." Another Knglish writer of the same period casually comments on silver forks "being ustd of late by some of our Hprucc gallants. The folk was invented in Italy early in the iteenth century and introduced in Kngland soni-J yeai later. Twentieth century reactionaries who refuse to substi tute the foik for the fingers and knife obviously have more precedent than the folk feeders, for it was only three hun dred years ago that fingers and knives were projH'r in loyal society. There seems to have I teen no diffeivntintion between good and bad table manners of that olden day. one diner's being as good, and piobably jut as sonorous, us another's.
