Stores will be open evenings the last days before Christ mas to accommodate the man who has a wife but hasn't a calendar, - - . There always will be people who work alioiit two-thirds; of the day, who watch the clock incessantly, and who con sider the boss' interests last. And they always .wonder why their job doesn't pay more or get them further. The British baronet who has been in the business of shipping liquor cargoes to the American coast din ing the j last year finds it an unprofitable venture and is in bank- i ruptcy court. That others connected .with tho receipt on ' . this side have not suffered a similar or worse fate is a ' sad commentary on-American law.. . (. , . i ' ! ; : ; SAFER. ',. : . I - In 1904 the American railways carried 49,712,503 pass engers one mile for1 each passenger killed ; in 1914 they 'carried 1(52,401,815 passengers one mile for each killed; in 1921. they carried 244,612,919 passengers one mile for each one killed. These, figures, taken from the Railway ,'Ajfe, show' that travel1 by irl,pow i en lyn, -fifth b- haa aidous as it was 20 years ago. In fact, about the safest place one can be is on a railway train. It is safer than being in bed, for it was Mark Twain who painted out the perils of the latter, so many persons die there. The high mark in passengers killed was reached in 1907. Since then chere has been an almost steady1'' decrease, literally so in proportion to the number of passengers carried. The favorable showing in railroad -operation extends; also to the employes. In 1904 one man out of each "57 ; employed was killed. In 1914 this had been reduced to' one in 538, and in 1924 to one in 1,104. The introduction fif' safety appliances as well as the inculcation of. cautious-.; ( ness has had this gratifying effect. So long as the human, equation is subject to err there will be accidents which! cannot lie foreseen. The most that can be done is to con fine them, to the minimum and jn-njrrcss to thai end cer tainly is lieing- made. A NEW PERIL. 1 ' j Civilization has weathered wars involutions, reformers,1 crime waves, peace, war debt and disannliment conferences, bolshevisms, communism and the fascisti, prosperity and panic, quake and tornado, reckless driving and jay-walking, and the combined detonations and fulminations of jar., static and the saxaphone, but there is a new peril that is moi deadly than the yellow. ! A man has been asphyxiated ley the fumes from dough-, nuts flying in a pot of lard. .lust when the world was resting easier and becoming reconciled and adjusted to the one-thousand-and-one other perils which infest this globe, this most unexpected and lamentable peril arises. Who would have looked for such violence from the mild and tractable doughnut? Never before has it been guilty of homicide nor has it been known to resort to mob law, rioting or disorderly conduct. ' The only trouble than, can be traced to this most do mestic of culinary cvolvements, until this present crime, is the provocation of some controversial friction on the question whether a doughnut is a cruller or a fried cake, lioth or neither. Some contend the doughnut is not a dough nut, but a cruller, and that a cruller is a doughnut without the hole. In another geographical section the cruller is a fried cake and the doughnut is a fried cake full of air. For the sake of the merest fragment of belief that there are still harmless and innocent tilings in this world, it is to lie hoped that the coroner's jury erred aiid that the victim asphyxiated himself arguing over when is a doiiirhtnul not a doughnut.
