""The approaching holiday season is heralded by the usual request of the postoffice department that the public do what it 'can to aid in' the prompt handling of mail mat tor which will be increasing in volume each day from now until Christmas. . In sending gift packages two things are important if disappointment is not to be invited careful, wrapping, and mailing as soon as possible. Holiday package majl may be marked to indicate it is not ,to be xipened until Clyistmas, and this permission should result in an increase in early mailing. It is a mistake for any person to feel that the small amount of mail which he sends does not delau-tlie trans mission of mails, but the aggregate of -mail matter in a community like La Orande severely tests the facilities of the postoffice force at each holiday season. ' Even if an individual does not take the broader view of making his contribution toward the handling of mail, he should think of the personal advantages in obtaining the best results in his own shipments by turning them over to the "postal force early enough to avoid the inevitable rush of' the holiday season, thereby having reasonable assurance of prompt delivery. UY! The greatest gift is life, but man is not privileged to give that. However, the next greatest gift is health and that man can give by buying Christmas seals again this year. If every man and woman will buy a few of the little health stamps the billion that must lc sold this ChrisUnas season will quickly be distributed and another year of effective warfare against the white plague will be assured. The Christnii'.s seal is the standard of one of the most hopeful and dramatic fights ever made against disease. This fight is being made against one of the oldest plagues that have afflicted man. I'or thirty centuries the dread disease has gone steadily on, marking its victims and leav ing them to a lingering death. The approach of the disease is so slow and gives so little warning that for many cen turies no attempt was made to stamp it out or to prevent the spread of infection. Other plagues got in their de vastating work so quickly and o)enly that man was moved to organize for sclf-pmteetion and succeeded in wiping them out. Finally man launched his fight against the white plague and immediately liegan to gain ground. It is estimated that tulwiculosis in the Vnited States ilHs out a small-sized city ever year. Tt is also estimated that to endure the disca.se in its present stage for the next r,5 years would cost Hie nation twenty-six billion dollars. In the last 'Jo yeai education and sanitation have com bined to cut the death rate from tutarculosis in two. Medi cal experts estimate that ke -ping the disease under con tin! for 35 years will mean virtually exterminating it. Will the public give seven billions of dollars in the next "." years to abolish tulieirulosis or will it permit tulieiculosis to take from it twenty-six billions of dollars and many thousands of lives? That is the challenge which the nation answers every Christmas. The seal sale in La Grande starts Friday of this week.
