World War veterans should take care in their reminis cences not to recall (before their wives) how many French Rirls kissed them seven years aifo today in celebration of this Armistice. Tho resolution passed by tho Chicago city council ex lircssinjr a desire to secede from the state of Illinois to form a new stale should not be objectionable to the rest of that commonwealth. Any scheme to get Chicago gunmen r.nd bandits off by themselves deserves encouragement. . A DAY OF VHACK; , It Jia a, fitting thing that mankind on this memorable linniversary of Armistieo Day can feel that universal peace has been so nearly realized during tho last seven years, that so much progress has been made in solving tho many differences of Kuropenn nations, and especially that good feeling to u more marked degree has been established be tween France and Germany. Tho signing of tho Locarno pact and tho consequent agreements that will safeguard and promote peace in tho coming years should give additional cause, no matter if future adjustments make it seem futile, for celebration of the victory and the accomplishment of peace .that Armistice Day commemorates. Armistice Day is a day of celebration and a day of joy not one of sadness and mourning. The feeling of every American is one of tenderness as they think of those who died, hero or overseas, for the cause of the Ureal War, but we celebrate tho day for what was accomplished with its dawning, we celebrate for the deeds and the bravery that made such accomplishment possible, and we celebrate for a nation of young men who offered and made the supreme si crifice for home, country ami flag. Such an accomplish ment, such deeds and bravery, and such men are worthy of the heart-fell celebration that characterized that first Armistice Day and this day. It was a happy day then and it should always be so. F.ven for "those who gave the most" it should be a marked day in which they can find happiness that such giving was for one's country. During the seven years since Armistice Day came into being America has kept the faith. Kegardless of what one may think about our entry into the League of Nations or our particiiwtion in L'mvpean affairs, it cannot be said that we have not lieen a friend of all nations, that we do not desire peace with all mil ions. We have helped restore peace to l'mvpo. Our example of government by the peo ple is one of the signposts that points the way to peace. And the principles of self-government if there weiv any clearly defined principles in our minds those days were the principles for which American soldiers fought in Fiance. Certainly America has not deviated from that course, ami today a thoughtful citi.enry longs for the day when all Kuropcan people will grasp the U-ncfits those principles oiler. 'Saw! FEt?
