It must be a great blow to miners and operators in the ; eastern coal fields to discover how little attention js being tfiven their controversy by the rest of the country. The misanthropic author of the' epigram, '"The masses nre always wronjr," is .sometimes confirmed by events of tha days, if he employed the word "masses" in the sense, of popular belief. For decades and for some reason, now unknown, the jiublic has1 been under the impression that the American Indian has been rapidly approaching extinction as a race. Terhaps the average person, if examined on the subject, would express the belief that it is only u mutter of a few generations before the last full-blooded Indian will have trone to his fathers. It must have been with nmnzement coupled with in credulity that many received the census bureau's announce ment of an increase of 2,fi93 in.tho country's Indian popu lation during, the year ended Juno 30. But one is puzzled even more by census figures showing a gain of 18,976 in the Indian population in the last twelve years, that there lire 120,1(13 Indians In the state of Oklahoma and that there are now 0,13!) Indians living in Now York state. '. Iiettcr living conditions, economic prosperity and the beneficial effects of civilizing influences prolnibly account for-the growing Indian population. That the race has survived to this time is remarkable, although there now seems to be no valid reason why it should not multiply. The red man is no longer made the target for the white man's rifle and many tribes have become fabulously weal thy from oil discovered on the Oklahoma lands the white man's government believed barren and worthless and there fore set aside as reservations for native Americans. c Cutting Down Coal Waste in the Home Wintry blasts without; in the home the mildness of May.
