HEALTH POISON OAK ' (Hy Dr. I-'i'ederlrk Strieker) There is one plant that heralds the approach of yrooler weather 1 quicker than all other vegetation native lo the stato of Oreaon. The leases of poison oak or rhus dlver iiloba' are usually the first to change color. The poison oak plant Li perhaps most frequently n countered by the unsitspeettiif? eltv visitor to the country. Vet it may be distinguished easily from ' other plants by its shiny . leaves, j which are grouped In threes. Two i nt the leaves are opposite and short , .stalked, while the middle leaf is long stalked. It grows as a short j shrub or nmnll tree. Us berries are smooth and greenish, which 1 titer turn to a yellowish while. ; These distinguishing " marks, if' borne In mind, wilt protect the va cationist from poison oak. Poisoning usually occurs as a re sult of actual contact with some part nf the plant. It Is possible, however, thsit a person can be poi soned bv tlie leaf hairs or pollen of the plant if only a short distance from It. The poison is also spread by burning the shrub. While many people can wander at will through a growth of poison oak without danger, there e,re' some 'p'b"pfe who nre highly susceptible to the poi son. If you have come in conflict with poison oak. one of the surest and Itest ways to prevent the eruption l to nne soup nnd warm wster. for the poison requires some time to penetrate the skin. A stiff brush should not be used as this might lend lo drive the poisonous mnie ftnl farther Into the skin. A more or less mild attack may be ushered in by a burning and itch ing of the skin. Within 21 hours afier the skin Is exposed to the poi.Hon u red rash appears. This Is folic wed by more or less swell ing and itching, then small blisters filled with serum make their ap pearance. The irritation of the eruption may be allayed by im mersing the inflamed surface in a solution of hyposulphite of soda in the proportion of two tablespoons tn the quart of water. Warm solu tion of boric acid or common salt or bilking soda may be used to re lieve the Irritation. Favorable reports on the use of extracts of pcisuti ntik lor the pre vention and treatment of this form of skin In flam nmt Ion have been made by a number of phyHieitinH.
