OUT OUR WAY Tlio federal motor hiw is said to hiive placed 3,000 imtomoliile thieves In-hind the liars, hut the ones not thciv me tlio ones emitting tlie trouble now. , Another western college has banned tlie use of auto mobiles by students. With this sort of policy continued the rah-rah variety will soon decide there is no fun in jfoinjr to collepe. The finding of the Pacific flyers, alive and sound, is a relief to all the nation. Their fearless and almost success ful attempt to bridge the distance between San Francisco and Honolulu deserves high praise. The hick of prepara tion to meet such an emergency should be a lesson to army and navy in the future. If every precaution cannot be taken to guard against disaster along the route of flight, then the attempts should not bo made. Prohibiting students from huving automobiles At col lege is a sensible regulation on the part of the school au thorities, but it would seem to 1 something of an indict , mcit against parental good judgment that such, a thing j: would be necessary. Hoys and girls are about the nioit human individuals you can find. If given the idea that (1collfge is all fun titid no work, they'll conduct themselves , accordingly. Parents are responsible for the ideas they have, THE TRl'E REASONS. The coal strike in the fall of the year, which has be come as regular a part of the American calendar as l4ibnr Day or Thanksgiving, is an economic problem that pustules nil of us when we fail to consider the numerous facts re garding the coal industry that have been responsible for this condition since the givat coal activity of the war period. The Dearborn Independent gave the real basic reasons for the annua! cn:! strike in a recent editorial that lays proper stress on the surplus number of mines and miners and the decreasing demand for coal. It says, in part : "The cpeiuUns want a strike, because it will lie on excuse to hold up the public on the price. The miners want a strike, because it will close a number : of 'surplus mines and make employment for the ; rest, These, nro the human elements, but they couiit " lor comparatively little. The big facts are these: We have nearly twice ns many mines oen as we have need for. We have thousands of miners who are not Horded in mining. Anil, in addition, the country is not using as much coal as it formerly did. Loss coal does more work than it used to, because of improved furnaces and machinery that have been evolved. Also, oil is lift ing some of the load; ai'.d water-power is helping. Coal is no longer king. Ten years ago raihwuis used 27f pounds tf coal per thousand ton miles. Today the same ton nuie nge is accounted for by oil tons of coal, llailroad men prophesy that five years hence the figures will be SO pounds. That, in brief, is what is Imperilling to coal. More economical use of it is resulting in less of it being needed. Coal was made so difficult to get that the public in self-defense devised means for deceasing the necessity to get it. How to direct the thousands of sin-plus miners into other channels of industry and how to get operatoi-s to ciose the saws of small mines that woi opened during tho war period ami proved profitable only during that lime that is the coal problem today. Although compara tively untouched here in the west by strike complications, we are forced to Ix-nr indhvctly a portion of the hurdri that comes from having this industry out of balance. And knowing the true conditions of the situation we are less inclined to be sympathetic toward either group in the controversy. jam 60M1 SuP hes sOumG FtLU.R-VsAw:iF TiHAf NtLwoH BON v OOmvm T5 Th ORuCx VNWit-t Ncxioe CXJT J OtftCE Bos vw,fTAMiMT, am GET ME Ij c,T6P AT TH HOT ICiON OUT, HAME STOP IM AT" 1 S A MiCKLtS VAJOrffiA I DOGt STAuD AM' wiMStDPlMTVV ItH AUtO CUJB ) Of RAOlVJM. am Ttl-L 1 6E.T ME AM COOPuS ARCADE.
