The former kaiser is said to lie signing himself "King" in his letters. If that is true, we are at a loss to under stand whether he is suffering from hallucinations still or is just a modern optimist. . It's refreshing to hear good orchestras in good hotels play good old-fashioned music again after several years of jnzz. Maybe Henry Fold's pr paganda in favor of the c d-linie music and qld-time d..ncing is really accomplish ing something. : will accomplish a tremendous amount for this section of Eastern Oregon. A real man, after climbing to the top, doesn't forget those who held the ladder for him. Victor Lawson, late publisher of the Chicago Daily News and one of the most outstanding newspiipe men of his time, remembered his aides most generously in his many Inquests; and his hun dreds of thousands of readers, who had an equal part in his success, he remembered equally well with gifts of sev eral millions, three-quarters of his estate, to institutions devoted to their welfare. One cannot begrudge such a man the accumulation of great wealth and greater influence. -S MMSS .11 llll. I I I HI !. I. SI1IIIM I l ! . MORE POLITICAL BREW. The endorsement of the possible candidacy of Fred Steiwer by Judge Harris of Eugene, rumor of which was i chronicled in this column some weeks ago, is the most j interesting political development to learn as one returns i from an out-of-state trip. To those who appreciate the size of .the Harris following and the stable, conservative character of those who are influenced by the Eugene jurist, i nothing could add quite so much to the Steiwer boom as this endorsement. ! The Pendleton attorney, or, the other hand, is not jump ing into the race against Stanfield's recognized strength without the most careful consideration and full confidence that he is wanted and will be supported by many of the best groups in the state. His caution and hesitancy are to be admired, yet it is difficult to sec, as the Voter stated, how he can refuse to become a candidate for the senatprial nomination now. The Harris backing, added to his popu larity in Legion and educational circles, would make Steiwer the strongest possible Stanfield opponent by far. What effect this latest development will have on others who have been considering entry remains to be seen. If lit keeps other likely candidates out, the Republican primary should have all the fireworks of a real show. If it attracts I others to jump in before Steiwer announces himself, tho I present junior, senator v ill profit by increased competition. (Whatever happens fina'ly, the coming year promises in j '.cresting things for Oregon politically, especially if Marshall I Dana should be nominated by the Democrats to make the ' race against the Republican victor. What a crusade M:ir j shall could make if given a good start! , Several real estate men in Tacoma, with whom wc had tho pleasure of talking lvcentl.v, are anticipating the visit to La Grande next year for the convention of their North west association with great p'easure.
