"V: V tW f -' WUiWI Ait , A 1 f 0 TU BLilGK KEEPS PROGRESSING (lly II. If. Itasse(t) ' (I'l'esideiit, Buick Motor '.) I'rogress obtained by work of the hardest kind has brought the iiutomollve imlnsti-y within a quar ter of a century from virtually nothing to the commanding place in the industrial life of our coun try. Now that first place has been attained, there should be no ten dency to sit back satisfied. This attitude must not be assumed tf the industry is to retuin its lead-position. The commercial .history of this. country Is replete "with , lrisrunce.s of manufacturers who felt that they had arrived and could rent content only later to be rudely awakened by some young, vigorous rival who recognized the principle that to succeed you must progress. 10 very year for I wo decades the leading uutomobilo manufacturers have brought out what they hon estly believed was the best car- In Its price class, and felt that It could not be excelled. Yet within twelve months thejr own engineers have proved that the, product could be improved. And so it has gone on, each year seeing better auto mobiles and so it will continue us long us it is possible to make Im provements. Years. ago the Hoick Motor Co. took for its slogun, "When Itetter Automobiles are Built. BuU'k wilt Ituild Them." This was not se lected as a vainglorious boast, but was predicated on the well defined policy that Jtuick intends better ing its product by the adoptions of such Improvements as continuous experience may develop. Maybe the perfect automobile Is yet to be built. No one can siy how close or how far we ure from that coveted result. Mxtensive re search will reveal this, anil I his fact (s recognized by the more pro gressive manufacturers who ure constantly striving to make a bet ter car. This has been tho policy of the r.ulek Motor Compuny ami It will continue ag such. The large en gineering and research si alls of the Hoick are constantly working to creale better Hoicks, and as they progress better Huieks will be built. It Is a good thing for the indus try as a whole that, there Im a ten dency to discard the hnbil of muk fng changes merely for the sake of having a cljange. Hut this extend ed to the curtailment of real im provements from year to year would mean but. one thing ulti ma I tiy t hat the ant omollve In- AIR LIFT PUMP DELIVERS GAS AT HIGH SPEED What is thought to bw the Mist air lift pump of Its type in the city wa installed by Itobert Carey at the Highway Killing station this week. The new pump Is a Hoyle Day ton make which works by- com pressed air. The pump is in ap pearance not unlike the ordinary gasoline distributor but is vastly different in operation. " A large piston at the top of the pump Is forced up by compressed air thus drawing the p-.isoline out of the underground storage tanks into the car. The pump is entire ly automatic in action. By simply turning a knob to life required number of gallons and operating a vatvtt bundle thu operator places s , much gasoline us desired in a ! car in the shortest space of time. In action ttje air lilt pump works 'faster than uny other type of gaso I line vender and had (he added ad vantage of pumping the gasoline from the underground storage lonk:i, thus the gasoline is deliv ered In its natural slate und Is not expanded by the heut. The air lift pump Is ulso entire ly uccui ate tit measurement. It was sealed by the government in spectors before It left the factory. Tho Highway Killing Station in selling Texaco und Ked Crown gasoline exclusively. dustry would start slipping back ward, for it is a truism that noth ing stands still, we must continue to go forvvord or go backward.
