The WeMlnv- iho jse KlflMrto "ft Manufacturlnrf ji'o. has acquired the t'nited Hiftt'-n flfifhis to -a new typo of heat con trol device, Invented by John A. INpencer of Kevere, Mass., for con-jstdci-atlon valued at more than a million dollars. The device, known as the Hpencer thermostat.Mvlll tni used 1o regulate uutomatieally the ternprraturu of 'electrical appu- atus und Its first appllratlon by Westlntfhouse will 'be 1n a new automatic flat-iron. The Hponcer thermostat consists of u convex discof two dts-slmllar metals welded together. When heated to a certain predetermined temperature, thin disc has the pe culiar property of snapping from the convex to a concave shape. When it cools to a lower tempera ture it uKuin changes its shape. beconiinK convex once more. This action can be used to open and close electric circuits and provides u'new method of heut control. By varying the characteristics of the dim- it can be inade'to act within uny desired tempera) ire raiiue. 1 roin below zero degrees to 7 o:i degrees Fahrenheit. The principle on which the Hpeneer thermostat acts In so novel Ithat it has received the first basic pulem on iiulck acting thermos tatic bi-metul devices that has ever been issued by tins L'nlted Htates patent office. The story of this invention well illustrates the old adage, "Oppor tunities lie everywhere If you have hut the eyes to see them." jln Mr. Spencer's cause, it was b.- Ing able to apply his observations ,ot the action of a steam boiler which he ten ded yea rs a go in a Maine lumber camp that resulted In his recent invention. Ihe Trick Boiler. The boiler wus located In a lum ber mill In the northern part o." Maine. Spencer, a boy then aged about 15, was employed on tile night shift In the milt, and In ad ditional to making periodical touts or inspection, he bad to maintain the fire in the boiler. The task of firing kept him particularly! busy as. the weather being cold, ! the wood refuse used as fuel j burned quickly. Therefore, be! constantly had to run to the boil er room to see If the lire needed replenishing. The peculiarity of this boiler lay in the fact that It had a rounded cleanout door which was constant ly changing its shape with a loud snap or click. At times this door would be convex; then It would snap into a concave shape; and then again It would bulge out und 'become convex. This action wus well known ' to every one in tiie inlll. but no one, except Spencer, gave. It the slightest serious thovight. The young watchman, however. Was interested by the ac tion und by careful observation he soon disco vercd the cause: When the door wus hot. It rounded In wurds; and as it became cool, it . peculiar action. He therefore de- elded to investigate it in order tt learn If It had practical value, and after a series of experiments worked out a formula for a com bination of metals that best suited his purpose. His first practical application of the new principle wus a toy. He stamped out little: convex discs which, when heated in the hand nnd then placed upon a cool sur face, would suddenly change thi.tr shape with a click and spring several feet into the air. Speed ,of a Itlfle Hullet. Later a very Important use for this snap action developed. Klec trical engineers have long sougnt for some effective means to regu late the tempered re of an elec trically heated appliance, such as a flat-iron, by turning the current on and off automatically. Cer tain devices for this purpose have long been available, but they are not entirely satisfactory becausi they operate so slowly that tin arc forms between the contacts and In time will corrode the eon tacts, eventually making them use less. When the Spencer disc Is used as a thermal switch. It clicks oil or off in less than .oon id sec ond (speed comparable o, that of a rifle bullet) which is so rapid that no arc forms. Hence It ran be used for heat control with entire success. To JtevolutloniM? Hlectrlo Healing Westlnghouse engineers stale that electrical heating apparatus will be revolutionized by the use of the Hpeneer thermostat. An Iron In which It Is used, for ex ample, will heat tip to the most efficient temperature and then with a sharp click the current will be uutomatieally cut off. The Iron will then sturt to cool, but before it gets too cool for satisfactory use, the cirrent again Hill be clicked on. This process is repeat ed Indefinitely, so that the Iron is always kept at the proper working temperature ami cannot get . dan gerously hot. Himilarly coffe per colators, w ater beats, etc., using this device, can be boiled dry w it tiout damage, for as soon nn t lie temperature begin to rise the current Is cut off: It .
