'' Wallowa county put itself on the map in the minds of 'Portland caravaners Friday evening and Saturday in a i,ay that will be long remembered. Wallowa greeted the mg line of cars with ice cream refreshments, Enterprise was out with J-tnd and the entire populace to give greeting, and Joseph vk: Id have remained up all night, if necessary, to show its unfailing hospitality. Every member of tlio caravan has a warm spot in his heart for those excellent towns. Every member was cnlertaiued royally. They will anticipate a return to Wallowa county with true pleasure. ! PORTLAND'S OFFICIAL VISIT. l The "official" vacation of Portland, as engineered by tfie" Ad Club of that city, was a distinct success, according jCu several members of the caravan who expressed opinions about the Wallowa trip yesterday. There were a few de- i u..i ,i-li i....... i. i......, i.lupw .liy itiki-M Vhi nil. lintly for the comfort and convenience of the visitors, but jor the first thing of its kind the caravan more than lived up to the expectations of those who made it possible. .' The four or five Portlauders who had previously visited this section of Eastern Oregon and were so enthusiastic about the country east of the Mine Mountains, wished lo Impress on members of the caravan and Portland in geu ijral that the loauliful Wallowa vacation region is but 1 1 ijlolor hours from the Kose City. This they accomplished End it was an end which justified the means. Without thai j(bject in view, it would have been much better for those in rjharge to plan an over-night stop in La Grande, rathe, than continuing on to the lake. Such a schedule would pave made the trip just as satisfactory and much less jjtrenu'ous. I,a Grande has adequate hotel facilities thai Jpould prove entirely satisfying, and the remaining drive o the Wonderland would be easy. Having demonstrated pow short the entire trip really is, future excursions will J firobably be on a basis that includes La Grande as a night'sj ijtop. J Herbert Cuthbert, representing the Portland Chamber of Commerce, expressed the opinion yesterday that 80 per jfent of the caravan membeis would return to the lake with-' iji the next yearand bring others with them. The entire personnel was most enthusiastic about the trip and about1 V'allowa. They did, indeed, "discover" Eastern Oregon and found that it is a land of beautiful valleys, fine farms, and excellent highways instead el' a sagebrush country stretch big finni the P.lue Mountains to the Nebraska line. m'. Crande enjoyed having them and will enjoy having them flgain, anytime and eveiylinie. If we. as a city, left any thing undone that might have contributed to their com fort and enjoyment, it was due only to a lack of knowledge 8s to what it was, not a lack of desire or interest.
