Any "Baiting"
Of Tourists
Charges Made by Poca

swered by Local Justice
of Peace.
"No man has ever been lined
on u traffic violation in my court
thut hasn't been given every op
portunity to have an immediate
trial, by jury or otherwise, und I
have always been more reasonable
on tourists than on anyone else,"
stated Hugh Brady, Justice or the
peace of l.u Grande this morning
when shown a clipping from the
Idaho Stale Journal, published in
I'ocatello, Idaho, which charged
thai Mm local "court operated a
money making scheme and It is
a scandal to the state of Oregon."
Judge llrady believes that t he
matter s spite-work from start
to finish ami gives his reasons us
follows:
Koine t line ago one John it.
Hrady, now editor of the I'ocatello
paper, was driving h rough east
ern Oregon on his way to Ilaker.
Coming through Ii Grande be
took tht turn that leads to Wal
lowa luke and didn't realize he was
on the wrong road until reaching
Wallowa, about F.D miles from here.
He then apparently decided to
make up lost time, Mr. Brady
says, and started back to la
Grande. Ho was arrested before
reaching here by Traffic Officer
Parker, then affiliated with the
county force, and was brought be
fore Judge Brndy. who, upon evi
dence being furnished that the of
fender was driving at 47 miles per
hour, rined him J 10.
"Any man Is always released in
my court if there Is uny existing
doubt that the officers made a
mistake. I must have absolute evi
dence Itrfore further steps are
taken," Judge Brady declares.
He further cited t hut several
tourists who have been arrested
have declared they would "adver
tise l.u Grande t hroughout the
northwest" and that they appar
ently have done so because to 44
j arrests i April, ontv 1 8 were
marked up In May. At present the
county has no ot fleers and Hiatc
j Truffle Officer Dunn is working"
the dlst rict because of a recent
law passed by the legislature, do
