The Dally Vacation Wide school
has closed the first week of its
work highly satisfactory to all con
cerned and a proven success in
every way. Rev. Bert. A. Powell,
superintendent of the school, de
clares. The venture, though new to the
community, measured by numbers
or pupils enrolled, is indeed sue
cessiul. Friday the enrollment fig
ure reached r('4. In Walla Wulla,
a city twice the size, of l.u Grande,
enrollment In a similar school was
but a few over 700, and In Portland
n school there had an enrollment
of but about fiOO. Mr. Powell be
lieves thut some of the classes will
have lo be divided It teachers can
be obtained In order lo adequately
take care of the pupils.

of twenty-eight victims had lute
yesterday been recovered from
the Carolina. Coal Compuny's
mine in which a scries of explo
sions entombed fifiy-two mlnera
on Wednesday.
Four other bodies now located
are to be removed Inter.
No Hopes Held.
All hope that any of the. vic
tims may be. scscucd alive has
been abandoned by mine offi

the proposed franchise asking' for
a toll section on the new road be
tween Tillamook and Forest Grove.
