The city of La Grande desires an official city flower, so make your surest ions early. Surely some choice blos som can he named that will properly typify the beauty and wealth and charm of this child of the Grande Uonde. The Idaho State' Journal of Pocatello has made the sug gestion that the Treasury Department authorize the coin ing of a Covered Wagon - Oregon Trail half dollar to com memorate the winning of the Northwest in a fitting way us the new Stone Mountain half dollars are to depict the great leaders of the Civil War. Certainly the Old Oregon Trail and what it has made possible in a great Northwest is deserving of such recognition. A FATKFUL AXNIVKKSAKY. On this, the tenth anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania, it is with revived indignation that the country men of thoM 1,3.)0 jnnoceiu; victims recall to mind this ficmlr. ish act of a war-crazed nation, and it must be with re morse that the German people and their former allies re member their great crime against humanity. Those who rememler the eventful years from 101 1 tu 1018 are probably convinced today that the United States would have preserved its neutrality to the end of the World war had there been no Lusitania atrocity. Although this country did not declare war on Germany until two years after the sinking of the Lusitania this outrage against American neutrality and every humane law was the first of that concatenation of events which culminated two years later in the cryslalization of public opinion in this country against the central powers and sunt the United States into the war on the side of the allies. It was the Lusitania that lost tho war to Germany and Iter allies and brought about the termination of the world's most devastating war through American intervention. t.. , KEORGANIZING DRY FORCES, J-.-.: Prohibition enforcement agents with "gunman and . money-making proclivities" are to be weeded out of tho prohibition branch of the revenue bureau by Assistant Secretary Andrews, of the treasury, the new commander-in-chief of the dry forces. As one of his first official utterances in his new office Assistant Secretary Andrews declared it his duty to abolish "hard-boiled" enforcement methods and to drive out of the enforcement service those agents who shoot first and investigate afterwards and violate the preamble, body and other eighteen amendments of the constitution in their zeal to get evidence for tho enforcement of the eighteenth amendment. Many friends of prohibition believe with the new czar t:f enforcement that mure conservative and scrupulous methods of enforcement will better serve the cause of pro hibition. Not even the most zealous advocates of rigid enforcement can condone the shooting of citizens in cold blood by dry agents merely "on suspicion," nor will they nbet the violating of the sanctity of the home in the name of the Volstead Act. The public would not long endure a band of nearly 2000 dry agent; riding dough-shod over the rights and liberties of the people, invading their homes without legal authority and murdering innocent persons and destroying private property without just cause. No doubt Secretary Andrews is right in his belief tint the number of the lawless sort in the prohibition forces is relatively small, but those few should be quickly ejected before the morale of their colleagues and the law-abiding portion of the public is broken. Is the argument of Sir Itonald I toss, tho Knglish scientist whose re searches twivc lead to cures for ma la Hit nnd sleeping sickness. Sir llonuld claims that a sixpence from (he pocket of every Knglishman (spent in scientific research, would result In new medical knowledge that would keep germs and old age away for ut least 15a years. The scientist thinks that the Al lotted span of three score years and ten should find man in the prime of life, Instead of edging his pedal ext remlty toward t lie grave. We live curtailed lives, he says, because we lire the prey of countless germs. Conquer the germs and man can easily reach the age of 150 and nioyhe longer. "Klghty years ago." said Sir Ron ald In a lecture, "the average life of u London man was about 34 years 7 months und of n woman years ond 4 months. Today it Is 5:t yeurs ft months and fif yenrs. Thus medical science In SO years has giv en us 20 years more of life." This start on cheating eternity has just begun, the speaker contin ued. Nowadays t lie equivalent of one penny n head is being spent In Britain for research, and he assert ed that the spending of i sixpence a head would make the monkey gland useless, A scientist of the Tastem Insti tute in Paris has predicted that In 1 on years from now the average mun will live to be Uo years old. Mechuikoff. the Knssian scientist, has made the same prophecy. These visions of n future race of Methusekihs are to materialize through the agency of the research laboratory, in Sir KonnhPs opinion. The laboratory worker in t he next generation, if allowed full scope, will trace nil destructive di seases to their source and extermi nate them, instead of combating them after they have appeared. Sir Honold said. Already research la boratories are at work on Impor tant medical problems. The Pas teur Institute Is seeking to destroy cancer and tuberculosis and tin I toss Institute tn London is work ing for the eradication of leprosy. Advanced Kmrlisb scientists hone to see research laboratories In every large city In the world, fi nanced by the state or municipality. In them the search will he curried on for unseen enemies of the hu-! man family until the last germ bus' disappeared.
