ByJvnius That once well-known old-timoer who used to bras thai lie could drink everybody else under the table is himself under the sod. Yesterday In Washington The fellow who doesn't believe in a vacation may be one whose -work is so poor he fears they'll find out while he's away how useless he is. A college president says that scholarship and brains lire beginning to be recognized as the big advertising assets of a College but the athletics still get more space in the newspapers. It's the driver at the wheel, not the car, that makes the trouble. Out, of some 1500 automobile accidents in Oregon during a definite period, approximately 1,100 were traced to faulty or careless driving nothing else could be blamed. Faulty mechanism of the car, poor highway conditions, etc., cause so few comparatively, that our problem of safety has to do with the individual driver and educating him on the value of taking every precaution possible when on the public streets and highways. If a driver takes the attitude that every other person on the road is a fool and conducts him self accordingly, accidents will be reduced to a minimum. j A SrLKNDII) TOWN. A gazetter informs us that Canton, New York, is "a banking post-village, the capital of St. Lawrence county, on the Grass lliver and the New York Central and Hudson River railroad, 59 miles northeast of Watertown; it has extensive steam sawmills and flour mills, boat works and manufactures cheese and cheese boxes, printing presses, etc., and is the seat of St. Lawrence university. Its population is 2,7!)7." There appears to bo nothing particularly startling or noteworthy in these facts. There are bigger sawmill towns along the Kennebec, more ambitious flour mills in Minneap olis, more cheese produced in any of a hundred Wisconsin towns and more bouts built in any Eastern harlw. What especially distinguishes this northern New York town is that of the 7fi3 houses in Canton, f..r2 are inhabited .by ;flw'ner$, that the pcopoHion of owners to venters is ap proximately fi Ui 1. This precisely is the condition that makes more directly than any other for splendid citizen nhip. The pride and satisfaction that accrues to the owner of a home because of that fact inevitably reflects itself in every manifestation of that citizenship, in his attitude to ward his community, toward his state and his government, in his sense of civic and social responsibility, in his attach ment to hearth and family which is the base on which our whole structure of civilization rests. Canton, New York, must lie a splendid town. "Ilo yon linvc n rndln?" "; It's vHilnir Hp with llic baby Hull uJl's nil' Hint sliriy liMik."
