Certain of tho hardiest annuals may be sown on the snow to sift down to the earth with the spring thaws and the seed will germinate utmost beforo the frost Is out of the ground and v ready to hurst Into bloom by the .Mrst of June. The seed may be .scattered where It Is to bloom now. Over the hulb beds these an nuals may be sown to spring Into tgrovtlt and cover tho unheautlfut fading of tho tulips unu uaitodiis. , In the list, the popples, perhaps .should be placed first. The Shlr Jey popples in their new and deli cate shades are one of the most beautiful of ' all the annuals. The ;lants will endure lots of freezing when young. Ollen mey germiiuuo from self-sown seed. In the fall und survive the winter to spring into growth willi the first warm sun of spring. They should he sown thinly, mixing the seed with twice Its hulk or more of fine sand to facilitate the process. , The annual larkspur Is another .plant that will stand the wilder in ,the seedling slate. Reautlful new colors in this fine annual are now (Mi sale, particularly the rose, car mine and watermelon pink tones In the stock or hyacinth-flowered section. 1 Itachelor buttons are a third Iron (lad that can be sown now. Ie sidle the fact that ii seeds an rather large, they germinate when. sprinkled upon the surface of the soil. Jn fact, this Is a characteris tic of many plants with fairly large seed. Perennial larkspurs germin ate best from seed that scatters on the soil from the ripening pods on the plant. Snapdragons grow ' best when started cool. They always self sow if given a chance and may be scattered on the frozen soil now. Others suitable for a winter start ,are sweet alyssum, candytuft, cul liopsis, calendula, California poppy, nlgella. Virginia stocks: in fact ,any annual that you know aelf sows itself from seed scattered the .fall before may be sown out of doors now for the earliest und sturdiest plants . In one of the recent articles, f Justified in there uas u dibcussiuit as to the! Hand Ne. li proper bidding of no-trump hands that were void of a suit or con-j tained only a singleton. The following hands are selected from those suhniilted as bidding no-trump. offers u differeut problem. U contains no-trump values and a void suit but the long suit of hearts Is nut a sound original bid. With u hand of this type, it is probably sounder to pass und bid the hearts on tho next round. St. 1 t.rande sty .s1 , Annuals for I-'olhigt; Iffeets . Many unnuals are as valuable or even more valuable for their foli age than their bloom und are very useful, In .thu garden.- Some of them owe their entire beauty to brilliantly colored foliage. The prickly poppies, argemones, now coming in fin; double hybrids nnd ranging from while to H(?hl yel low,, have handsome t hist lelike foliage of gray tones with white velnlngs In addition to their sllky bloom. They ure always ornamen tal, The most brilliant of Hie foliage annuals Is the anuirant litis, a glor ified pig" weed which has arrayed itself in gorgeous garments. Itur- bank has produced some wonder fully brilliant types of this plant. Hanging from dark purple to glow ing scarlets, these e-jslly grown an nuals make brilliant display. The cannas of stately foliage and gorgeous bloom are not hard lo ritlsu from seed If the hard, shot like seeds are filed thin on one uld nnd soaked in warm water for '24 hours before planting. They bloom I In first si anoii from seed. Tlic "dusty millers," cineraria muritima and i-nitaureu caiididls- lilma. can be raised In quantity for dglngs from u singl pack'-t . of t, seed. They grow as readily as lawn grass ami iiMike quh'k display when t tey hae been given a good start. Hand No. I Hearts .1,7ft, , 7 I Clubs A. Q. 7. li Diamonds it, G Spades A. J Hi In Hand No. J, one diamond is the proper bid. Jn llnnd -No. .'. one club is tin1 proper bid. Ho h of these hands contain no-trump values hut the singleton In each hand Ik a weak spot and there fore makes the suit bid the mjiiii I- n ease partner bHls the miss ing suit, the dealer would be tf bidding clubs on the next round of bidding. In Hand No. I, one spade Is the proper bid. The hand Is so strong that If properly bid It Is almost sure to make game. With such a hand, don't hesitate .to bid either clubs or diamonds on the next round If opponents overbid. If partner should Idd hearts, the dealer should, of course, bid no-trump. in Hand No. G one no-trump 1" the proper bid.. It Is what is called the minimum uu-lrump, that is, with uny less strength the lmiid should be passed .Hand No. 7 Is the type of hand that should be passed. H Is too weak to justify a bid of ono no-trump. In Hand No, 8 the. proper bid Is one club. it pariner mils one spade, the dealer should bid one no-trump. lf he bids diamonds or hearts the dealer should sup port the bid at least twice. It la a strong supporting hand but no tho type thai would justify a bid of one no-trump. Hand No. ! is a perfect example of a sound bid of one no-trump. It has three (l suits stopped, and two und u half quicK incus, more man me strength needed for an original bid of. no-trump by the dealer. The weakness in the diamond suit is not sufficient to make the no trump bid unsound. WiUr hands of this type, that do not contain a singleton or a void suit, the no trump bid Is sounder than the suit bid; in this case, clubs. Study these hands carefully and try out the suggestions. They will help your game a great deal. The following hand was recent ly played at one of the local clubs and caused conrhlernble comment. It is a flue example uf u "strip per,' that is, or playing out all t he cards of certain suits from t lie hands of both declarer und dummy and then forcing oppon ents to lead one of the remaining! suits. SI tipping a hand In this respect usually Is worth u trick but occasionally the opponents, by equally clever play, can foresee Ihe declarer's tactics and prevent t he coup. The hand Is given, therefore first as an example of "stripping" the hand by X, und second of clever defense by U: Hats Just For Spring Easter Arrive And A wide and appi'iiling assortment for every type of face, for street, for sports and afternoon dress wear.
