Jl's true that you cau Ret n haiixjut in I'oitland for less than it can be purchased in La Kranrie. but nothinir Is rm alxiut tho difference in the price of meals, for example. Tlu two local hotels serve u special luncheon al noon for fifty' cents that could not bo duplicated in Portland for halV again as much, and the excellent cafeterias and cafes serv ing luncheons produce foods at prices that would be as-' toundinu if discovered in I'oitland or almost any other town of our acquaintance. And nothing js quite so indica tive of local food prices as the meals that a city servw regularly. There are a number of other very excellent, examples that might be cited which have a greater .influence on th cost of living than haiictlts that would lend to destroy the popular belief that I,n Grande is a high pi iced tow n -that is, if the people who entertain that belief will iuvesli-' gate conditions and cwmpare with an open mind. The Journal's editorial writer, in this particular instance, had Jailed to do that. Certainly a careful comparison of liv-' ing costs and working costs between Im Grande and the1 cities farther west would not bring great disci-edit to that I which we call our own.
