It -was 'the motor bus hearing; and J J j they came from far and near. Bus men dropped ther ! :f steering wheels and appeared before the Highways com ! i f mittee ;and railroad representatives deserted their offices ! ;1j to' take a hand in the argument. j"! . ; John F. Logan, attorney for all the bus men, started j l the tangle. John is just about as tall as Rev. Quig'lcy, j ?5jiformer pastgr of the La Grande M. E. church, lie we.ua j - j a Prince Mac coat, and, we won't accuse him of wearing a celluloid collar, for he is a fighting man, but somehow I ; J John reminds us of a fellow who used to wear one years ' j j ago. , But he is smart. He has a mind as 'sharp as a frosty ;t morning at North Powder and he is one who never tires, j ; For over an hour ho ripped up the raihoutls, (lold of all i ; their former sins, called down the judgment of the people ,lupon their heads and then : that their death knell had ; ! had dcoreed a new means of trunspJtii'tatiA? aifff flftey nW.st j-: accept it. In his remarks John said the railroads .pay j nothing or comparatively nothing for the building and up Ji keep of the Oregon highways. There is where his foot ' I slipped, for Arthur Spencer, solicitor general for O.-W., 'A i better known as head of the legal department of that rail ' I' ...,.,J ;.i ;..(.. t.,i... : .... I- ivciu, biiru iitiA tjuiiu in cm iiiiiiiui ii I ill umiiliui P Arthur is a short, stockly fellow but a power in thought ;and an adopt in the use of the English language. 'Round and. 'round they went, and it is not unkind to stale that " the scrap reminded ua of he lean bird dog in mortal conflict. Before the case went to ' the umpire:; Arthur had showed up John in horrible shape. ! He had the figtiics to show what the railroads have done in overheads, grading, actual construction and. maintenance of the highways. : It was the first open fight between rail lines and motor busses in Oregon, and it was a good one. Sentiment was created at that hearing, for the crowd was large and to bacco smoke was thick. Glancing over the House and Senate It would appear that the bus men are in the minority, that there is a strong disposition not to jnit the motor bus out of business, but to surround it with heavy restrictions and; make it pay more- libei ally for the use of the highways. '"' '. When a preacher and an editor' walk into a, banquet' hall together there is cause for remarks. But when a preacher end on editor and Ike Patterson walk in together it is little wonder that guests almost drop their knives. Tha's what happened at the Salem Rotary club Wednesday. Rev. E. G. Keith, pastor of La Grande's Methodist church, was ft guest of the writer and the two of us became the guests of Rotary IUe Patterson at a Salem dinner. We were glad to mix the reverend gentleme.i up with a bunch of politicians, for it will do him good, even if he does not think so. Rev. Keith is here visiting his daughter who is : attending the Willamette university, and incidentally is enjoying the d'K secrets of political life which he has $o aptly, taken up rinee becoming a member of the Thitd House. When Mr. Patterson introduced his guests at the '.Rotary luncheon he said, "It 'becomes my duty to present jtq ypu two men whose walks of life are widely apart and it is, very rarely that this Rotary chit) is permitted to gazj 'upon them together." Then he told who Reverend Keilh was In a moM genteel and polished maimer, but ih his description of the writer lie did not use the line Furnace.
