All these favorable conditions exist yet there Is another Impending development which may be even a greater fac tor than any of thes ementloned. ; I have in mind the probability of a number nf'consolidations among tho industrials, as well as the, rail -rOadw, during l!J2f. Tills in turn was fol lowed by ft third era of consolida tions. This time railroads were prominent. Thn next great . de pression came In the !iiin at 1 lie time of Ihe Hryan free silver scare. Tills culminated wi!h the Hpaiiish American war and was followed bv I he first consolidation era of thn Industrials, It was in (his pe riod that Ihe United Hlates Steel corporation, Amalgamated Copper company. American Woolen com pany nnd various other Industrials were put together. In conjunction with Ihese consolidations (he mar ket rose to great heights culmin ating In UMifl. In (his study it la interesting to note that these eras! have occurred about twenty years apart, or one to each generation, j Therefore, as far as statistics aro : concerned, we, are. on this twenty j year basis, ready for. another era of such consolidations, although I do not give this as my reason for feeling that Biith an era Is now approaching.,, v K sponsion Verlod) Ttcsitlts. "Tho real reason for such con solidations is that during n, period of prosperity a largo number of new concerns,. In every line of h illness, spring up, old concerns expand, and almost every Industry becomes Inflated and spreads out. This results- In a total producing tfaiMiclby In excess of normal de munds. .During tho depression which occording'to tho law of ac tion and reaction is bound In fol low each industry gets into a poKlllon where It Is making no money, and Is subject to cut throat competition. Tlie only way out 'Is to reduce overhead, eliminate un necessary competition, and pro duce nnd sell economically. This Comfuiiahlu I Men Noyes Uarlier Shop. BURGESS 1S08 Jrlfrnoa An. can be accomplished only through consolidations which, when prop erly consummated, reduce the cost both of manufacturing und selling. There Is no reason why jthe present yeur should bo un ex ception .to tho rule. History la bound to repeat Itself, and the stage Is now set in utmost all In dustries for such consolfdutions. It Is true that bunk clearings are higher toduy und that a greut quuntlty of goods are being con sumed, but the average manufac turer Is now making little profit owing to the bigh cost of manu facturing und selling. This condi tion cannot continue indefinitely and, If such consolidations do not take place, then the weak concerns will bo eliminated through bank ruptcy. Hull Consolidations Seen "Of course consolidations of the railroads Is now being anticipated by all. Itoth the government and the security owners are united upon the need for such combina tion. Tho main thing blocking these railroad consolidations seems to be tlm fear of . certain railroad officials, attorneys, anil specialists who may lose their Jobs us a re sult. However, I hose consolida tions are Inevitable and the uctlon of the rails on the stock exchange Is now discounting thern. Con solidations amongst the Industrials, however, are Just -as surely ahead of us. This will be accelerated by foreign competition. Personal ly I do not fear foreign competi tion bo fur, as the next year or two Is concerned, as It will take V: ti ro ne some lime to get organized in dustrially so that it can Hhlo low cost goods in large M'lantH les. The real foreign competition wilt come three to five years from now; and when this conies, It will come with a vengeance, Wise are those manufacturers who refuse to wait hut who now get together ami pre pare for it by reducing overhead, lowering costs on ma nu fact uring. and by developing efilehyii sale organizations abroad as well as at home. Mr. Tlahson referred specifical ly to the possibility of drastic con solidations In t he automobile lu lus! ry, the shoo and lent her in dustry, the texille Industry, "den- eral business," ho concluded, " Is now again above the normal line, registering & per cciQ compared with 12 per cent below normal six months ago.
