No dmiht the legislature that combined nil elections
pn tlie same day felt it was working the spirit and letter
of economy. -Like many other political reforms, it .sounds
fine' to argue the saving in election expense by having
national, state, county and city officials chosen on the
fiume day.
" Rut, how does it work out? "
This year Portland has a city election that seems to bo
of far greater' interest to Portland people than is the na
lional election. j
La Grande has an election which bears directly on the!
(tty water question, and that question will take attention'
of La Grande people from national issues any time.
And, it is so on down the line. Every community haft
its local matters which are close to the hearts of the peo
ple, while national affairs seem a long way off.
The net result is that most voters lose themselves in a
maze of city measures on the ballot, state measures on the
ballot, together with a bevy of candidates who are being
attacked from almost every angle.
This very thing is probably responsible for a great
many people refusing to vote at -till. So, it is doubtful
if the legislature, which meant the best in the world, ac
tually did the right thing when it combined all elections
for the same day.

Enter Will R. King
He comes nut from Washington, P. C, just often enmijrh
to retain residence in Oregon and run for United States
senator or national committeeman. Thai's the record of
our old Democratic friend, Will U. Kinjf, who by the way,
is present head of the Oregon Democratic party, for he is
its national committeeman.
When the pulse of the "boys" around Portland was
beating slowly and they expressed the fear that La Fol
lette was to be second in Oregon in the presidential con
test in comes Will R. King, the sage from Ontario, the
rx-supremc judge by appointment, the late candidate for
the senatorial nomination, and assures the Jacksonian fol
lowers that there is nothing to their fear; that Davis has
the thing won, and all that is left to do is to light the
lwmfircs when election returns arrive.
That shot of hop is just what Hairey Starkweather,
Walter Pierce, Doc Morrow and the rest of the faithful
needed. From now until the midnight hour preceding elec
tion day there will be a Democratic campaign waged in
Oregon, and if Will R. had not rode the Pullman car from
the national capital the Democrats might have all voted
for the Iji Follette electors in this state. Thanks, Will R.,
thanks.

BECAUSE Union Gasoline is a highly scientific product, the real
story of its qualities would be clearly understood only by a
scientist, and the telling would require several thousand vords.
In general, therefore: good gasoline results from a combination
of circumstances involving ample capital in the company that pro
duces it, highly developed scientific experience and skill, and the
mot modern facilities for efficient manufacture and exhaustive
chemical research.
The Union Oil Company is In a position to employ all of the
necessary means to the most desirable end. Its reputation made '
by its products-" is its greatest asset. (
In the protection of this asset it is simply good business to give
you the thing that will maintain it the best fuel this company
knows.
i
Union Gasoline has the quality of non-detonation which means
less tendency toward "knocking" on hills, and in slow, heavy pulls
quicker acceleration, and a smoother, more vibrationless speed. '
You may take our word for this much it is good gatoline.
