ican life has a mess of this1 (piite often, probably never so
extreme as this year.
The campaign has reached the point of eharsres and
counter charges until it has overdone itself and people
tienerally are discounting all tales that aro told on the
eve of election. ,
The pot is boiling now, so lot her boil until the morn
ing of tho great day when every American has the privi
ledge of going to the polls and select his chVice for office.
The New Lodge House
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has ever been
a progressive institution, and the local lodge in l,a Grande
has kept pace with the growth of the community. Its
membership believes in owning real estate and in that
they are to bo commended. : '., '
When the Odd Fellows' lodge purchased the building oc
cupied by the Hub store it made a good investment. The
wisdom of its course was so pluinly shown that the mem
bers decided when the old Y. M. C. A. structure went on
the market, it would be a fine thing to have the lodge
own that building for a lodge home.
Its purchase followed and now the Odd Fellows have
started to remodel the interior for lodge and club room
purposes. When completed it will be one of the very best
; lodge homes in the state and every Odd Fellow will be
proud of it.
Full' Pay for Pershing
On General PiM.shinK's retirement from active service
in the army, there were many who expressed the opinion
that an exception should have been made in favor of Amer
ica's military leader in the World war period from the
rule requiring such retirement at tho a Re of (U. It was
declared that General IVrshinjr, in view of his lonjt and
distinguished service to the country, should be kept on the
full pay of liis post as prenernl for life. There was talk
that, if need be, a bill to this effect would be introduced
in the next session of congress .
A decision has been handed down by Comptroller Gen
eral IMcCarl, confirming one by Major General llethel, jude
j'dvocate general of tho army, that General Pershinjr,-by
net of his appointment as general of the armies, is entitled
to full pay for life.
Who will be likely to raise technical objections to this?
After all the words of gratitude that have boon expressed
to Pershing' by his countrymen it must be a matter of
satisfaction that a-way has been found to match them in
n substantial manner.

confinement. If one wants to
ralso foxes tn pens it surely Is bet
ter to get pen born.
We think the tox Industry a.
splendid business fr almost every
one. It appeals alike to the young
man, full of energy and ambition,
and affords ample scope for Uie
exorcise of alt his business ability.

man more advanced in years, who
no longer cares to face the keen
competition and the stress jind
strain of the business world. To

ment. And If one has not the
