His faith in Oregon is unbounded nnd here is what ho says about it m his last issue: '. There is no question, but what Oregon will one day Imj the greatest stale in tho union. -She has every advantage, every resource behind her. She has good land, rich land, timber, mines, fisheries, rivers and climate.' Above all she has a coastline, an outlet to the teeming East. Andjher harbors are among the best in America, nnd with slime attention can lie made among the best in the world.' All men of vision are agreed that the present civiliza tion will culminate on the Pacific slope. That is iot a dream. It is an inevitable happening in the course of tho evolution of race. Asia, in spite of its age, is the most undeveloped of continents. The wealth and the brains of the west will bo poured into it. And the shortest route to the East is from the Pacific coast. The greatest re sources to develop wealth and -brains; are on the Pacific coast also. ' Tho law of tho cycle of things helps us in our reason ing. And' so,' in 'the course of matters, Oregon will 'one day possess the greatest cities, the finest intellects, the most colossal wealth, and the deepest art. It does not matter that Oregon is slow in developing. The sturdiest and greatest tree is the longest growing. Mushrooms and qilicU-niaturing shrubs scarce survive a season. And othur slates and places are like mush rooms, blooming abruptly, hugely. But in Oregon we are building with care, building for posterity' and for the ages. And there will come a day when this faith shall be justified, when tho unborn generations shall lead tho van of' the country's progress. Try and see a little beyond the needs of tho immediate. Work and wait. P.eniember that art and science are the flowers of life and that western ait and western science must receive encouragement from the people. Above all have faith in Oregon. And in the end your faith will be justified. Not perhaps in your day or your age, but cven- lually. j lie individual is but a speck in n cauldron ,and n generation but a bible in the froth.
