Darrows, One of the Last
Willi Clarence Dairow's wonderful appeal to sympathy

criminal lawyer is Amost over. .
Darrow is one of the last of the hig attorneys whose
life work has been devoted to criminal piactice and whose
i.iatory lias shaken many a court- and turned audiences
(from bitter hatred to sympathy.
' It used to be that every county hud a strong criminal
' lawyer a man standing alone as it were, and when court
lot and a heavy criminal case was being tried people loft
their work to hear the lawyer's plea to the jury. In fact,
lawyers only a few yen in ago were gauged as to ability by
their 'criminal work nnrt by their speeches.

: ness does not pay, except in rare instances such as Harrow.

in smaller communities is unsought

-has made for him a name among men. We hoard him in
Hie court room, we heard him on the political stump, we
heard him at the Fourth of July celebration and we never
tiled of -his oratory.
They ait! gone, almost all gone. Darrow is one of the
very few who still remain to remind the growing genera
tion that once there were strong-lunged, strong-minded
men who were criminal lawyers-

An Honorable Life
When death claimed Constable J. M. 1 lilts a few days
ago it was n case of a man having lived his time and being
cut down by the Ci rim Kcnper that cares for ripened grain.
Mr. Hilts was a fine old gentleman, rather peculiar in
some ways, but nevertheless ho lived it good life, was
iquare with his fellowmen, had a circle of friends who
enjoyed him, and when the end cime he could not have
hud much to regret. ,
While he had no near relatives in this part of the coun
try ho lived in a way that commanded respect of the peo
nlc. No one depended. upon him but he was always caiv-
fill ty his earnings and ho died worth quite a little sum
of money.
As an officer of the law he was faithful and if he had
'!cen askctl what particular organization in life was dearer
to him than any other he would doubtless have said, "the
Lepublican party," for Mr. Hilts was one of thoso dyed-in-the-wool,
never-chaiige Republicans anil w.im intensely
proud of it.
