When the Pacific International live stock pavilion burned in Portland soveral days ago there was n half mil lion dollar loss. About $350,000 fell on the insurance com p. nies and the rest fell on the people of Oregon who had Mry liberally subscribed for stock in the enterprise. Now cornea thev question to decide, shall the Pacific Inteinatiomil Live Stock show discontinue, or shall the building be rebuilt and the pi cat show be put on? ' O. M. Plumnior, the leading spirit that erected the building and ' built the show, is naturally casting about lor public sentiment of the state. . Today, he wired the Evening Observer asking what the peoplo here thought about the matter.. We do not know. It is safe to say that Union nnd Wallowa county people want the show tonlimied, if such a thing is possible. Hut, it is also safe In say that financial assistance from this end of the stale will bo far loss than it was when the building was erected. This is not duo to lethargy of the people, but it is plainly dun to the fact that the live slock industry has fared mighty poorly in luto years and many of the breeders who enthusiiiKtically donated to the cause a few years ago are broke and out 'of the game now. ' Those remaining are suffering 'from the low prices of cattle, hence it Is hardly possible to imagine this section of Hit! country join ing in a financial campaign to assist the rebuilding of the pavilion. Mr. Plunimer anil his assistants developed a great xhow in a few years. It is one of the oiiUlajHling live slock events of America, and it would bo with great regret to Oregon peoplo should it be found necessary to abandon the dhow entirely. v Perhaps the insurance money will rebuild to the extent of continuing the show and when things grow brighter for the live slock nwij as, they are i.uro to do in time, then proper additions can be made to the building and the an nual even lean get back into its former successful swing. Rather Discouraging -7 A census taken in Windsor county, Vermont, the birth place of President Coolidge, reveals n '10 per cent decrease in attendance in every town and country church since 1890, although the county in those !W years lias acquired 5,000 automobiles and the larger number of its 1,100 district schools, and has substituted more, rapid means of transpor tation for the ,1,(i92 "working oxen" enumerated in 1K90. While it will not be safe to generalize for the whole country frdmthis pno comparative study theiv is afforded a startling intimation of what may le happening elsewhere. In a county where good roads, automobiles, railroads Mid other forms of rapid communication are relatively new it would be supposed that church attendance would bene fit rather than suffer. H is not improbable that the rural and village church throughout many sections of the nation have experienced the same defection, although statistics r.how that church membership in the large cities has stead ily increased. To sum up the church attendance for the entire county, it is only half of what it was a generation ago in proper lion to population. The conclusion reached by the sympa thetic student is that church interest has declined at an '.'alarming rale," and that if the decline should continue in Windsor county it will bo a question of only n few dec ades before the church will become n "deserted institution" ."lid not even the pious wMl "remain to pray." It may be paid that church attendance is not the sole index of relig ious experience and expression, but there is 110 other out ward evidence that is so reliably indicative of the place (hat religion has in the daily life of the people. The New Kugland fathei-s would . indeed see the "rural virtues leav ing the land" if they could read this report concerning the piosidenl's "home county." The nice thing about a bad start is it gives you 1(1011' to brag alsiul after you get ahead. " .Turkish judge who rules that poker is not a game of chance evidently has been "sitting' in."
