' The last few days of the Aemocratic national conven tion Jiave encompassed too many tragic events to permit the usual joking and jibing of one political party to an ctherj. The Democrats are up against what is very ap parent a most serious matter, and the fact that the scene is laid in New York city, that it is acas e case of two ele ments standing ready for battle, that the leadership of both "factions seem to be. incompetent to heal the sore, all combine to make' the national convention now in session in America s largest city a tragic event in American his- tory-an event which all men and women regardless of political party or religious creed sincerely hope will iron irselfjout without the break which still appears possible. Enterprise and Her Musicians Grande people enjoyed last eveninsr a most delicht ful musical program when the Enterprise Philharmonic orchestra opened Chautauqua in this city. . . . It; was without doubt the best Chautauqua evening ever experienced by this city during the many years we have had Jhisinutal;e.xwt. Prof. J. Davjd Jljuines, had. Jus orchestra in the top notch. Every player was alert and every- player is an artist. The selections rendered were high .class; and tho vocal numbers were very pleasing, i La Grande has a high regard for her sister city, En terprise, and her appreciation of the people of that com munity increased last evening when the orchestra so de lightfully entertained. I ' ' ' ' ' ' I People With Fortitude AJPomona grange meeting was held Saturday at Union. It was a very successful meeting, well attended, and tho problems of agriculture were discussed in a most interesting manner. . t ; . Tlte men and women who follow agriculture deserve the credit; for possessing fortitude, and yet their business is like rjther lines in the respect that when one is trained for a certain kind of work there is little to do but follow it. Kights now agriculture is at low ebb, it is in the lowly valleys while most other lines of business are on a higlic level financially. This fact so well known does not deter and slop the earnest procedure of the grange members who met Saturday at the Union experiment station and spent the day discussing ways to raise better live stock, to make the Und produce more grain, to improve rui.il conditions of Eastern Oregon. They were packed In 260 crates,- tho consignment weigh ing four tons. OREGOX HIGHWAYS. (Enterprise Record-Chieftain) Oregon citizens may well be proud of the highways built by the state. Hero Iil eastern Oregon there are sevoralitretches of road of such striking and spectacular appeal that a person cannot go over them without feeling thrills of plea sure. They are truly beautiful specimens of man's handiwork and blend themselves Into majest ie landscapes of which they seem In- I tegral parts. Such sections of road are found on the Oregon Trail be tween Pendleton and Ia Grande, between Union and North Powder. between Baker and Huntington. ,and on the Wallowa county branch highway between Elgin and Altnain. The Oregon commission also is doing most admirable work In the way of maintenance, which. is the chief problem for the future. No body knows yt what type of road way will carry the heaviest travel with least wear, and nobody really knows what is the mast economical type or roadway. Time and exper ience alone can settle these points. The state board Is conducting many experiments with crushed rock sur faces, and is actually maintaining these surfaces In such excellent 'condition that riding over them la a continual pleasure. There are few miles of rough, pitted or cor rugated highway In eastern Ore gon, and these will be resurfaced in their turn very shortly.
