' The. heavens are a dull drab today, thanks to a kind
Providence. -
' There is strong indication of a drouth-breaking rain
dnd all humanity throughout Eastern Oregon await the
foil of the thunder and the flash of the lightning with an
ecstatic joy that resembles youngsters waiting to see the
fireworks on the night of a Fourth of July celebration.
; " When we have plenty of rain we grow tired of cloudy
weather and wish for the sunshine, but when we go as long
as we have this year without moisture human beings seel;
rain through prayer and strong desire. It is very serious,
this, drouth that we have been going through. In Union
county and in Wallowa county it hns not been so bad as
in other portions of Eastern Oregon, but at that it has
been bad enough. In the hills the hunchgrass has seeded
lit a very slight growth, but good rains now will bring up
i( lot of feed, and peace and plenty will again prevail in

Joe Woods Knows

Grande, the old staphs driver who, last Fourth of July,
drove the coach that carried President and Mrs. Hai'dinK

people have gone at this pageant with a community spirit

or next day will see a show that will abundantly pleas
them.

How About It?
One hears a lot aliout "friendship." Occasionally the
remark, "everyone is his friend" is carelessly made. But
l such a thing possible? Wo doubt it very much. Friend
ship grows and blossoms not in generalities, but in explicit
i.U and distinct thoughts which canno't encompass largo
: i umbel's of persons.
j Emerson defined friendship by attributing ..to it the
characteristics of truth and tenderness. Metween friends,
rjich may be sincerely himselr, without the protection of
kIiiiih or affectation often assumed in ordinary intercourse.
"My friend," said Kmersim, "gives me entertainment with
out requiring me to stoop, or to lisp, or to mask myself."

loads and hard fare, which are bound to come. The end
of friendship is for aid and comfort through all the rela
