Sixteen hundred boys and 12,831 girls 15 years of age
were listed as married in the last United States census.
Eighty-two boys and '19!) girls of the same age were record
ed as widowed or divorced. While these figures arc net
great in camparison witli the total population they are suf
ficiently impressive.
In earlier times marriages were contracted at ages much
younger than the average now. It was not uncommon
a hundred years ago for girls 17 or 18 to marry but cer
tainly the man in such cases was older. However, in those
times a woman was old at ;S(). Then she put on a cap and
expecteJ to bo given the deference duo one who has seen
a long life. At the same time not the most hope'ful re
sults could be expected from marriages in this day of those
who have scarcely reached the age of discretion. The nor
ma! boy or girl is not through high school at 15 years.
It is quite clear then that those who enter wedlock at that
age prefer marriage to education. Perhaps they think they
do not need it when married and those who will take such
a step so sarly in life probably would not be benefited by
further schooling.
The percentage of married persons up to 4'1 years also
allows an increase over the previous census. Despite the

not enough to produce a decreased proportion. Marriage
is the normal slate of normal people, but mating at 1"
years is scarcely the normal action of normal youths. It
is an illustration of a tendmcy that is not healthful.
