Let Styles Be Stable
The beginning of :in emancipation from a tyranny, which
from its continuance for a long series of years without
challenge, had aetiuirod almost a prescriptive right, was
announced at tho convention of the Associated Dress In
dustries of America, held at Atlantic City. A former chief
of the bureau of foreijfii and domestic commerce, who is
how manager of the marketing division of a huge corpora-'
ion in New York, made the somewhat startling assertion i

to accept American ready-made dresses.
: While the dress industry in the United States is car-
j lied on on a grand scale, it has hitherto been on a rather
j precarious footing, caused by the rapid change in styles,
j whereby the life of a particular model of garment may be
t limited to five or six weeks. This precariousness and un
I certainty naturally had to hand-to-mouth buying on the
..part of retailers and a similar policy on the part of the
, manufacturer in the matter of purchasing materials. In
.',itheir own interest and for the sake of national thirft
J the producers of dresses and dress mafcrials rnight to set
- their faces against those kaleidoscopic changes of style to

set to work to rebuild their homes. To restore normal

ous problem in rebuilding. In the meantime there must be
