The report shows that the War De
partment still faces a Klgnntlc task ir

appointed by the Attorney General,
the report says, had made a good start
and "promises much toward to ra
tional and final settlement of war
transactions."

here tonight by climbing through a
window in the receptioon room of the
Institution. The Muthes sir. was com
mitted to the school from Oregon City
on November 20 of this year. Miss
Lewis was committed to the institu
tion from Multnomah county on No
vember 10. The girls were missed
within a few minutes after they had
escaped and the. officers were- notified.

now on, says the American Lumber
man, Chicago. Current buying is al

which are constantly arising because
of the continuation of building op
perations, made possible by the ex
cellent weather prevailing In most
sections. Transit cur get a large share
of this business, and when u mill or

always stipulated. Inquiry is heavy,
especially from I'ne yards in the mid
dle West und Southwest. Sales mana
gers expect that retailers everywhere
will come actively into the market
as soon as they have completed their
inventories, and that Dec. 16 will wit
ness much buying for delivery after

prices meanwhile are steady, the bot
tom apparently having been reach ea
two weekn ago. "It is generally ex
pected that prices will promptly react
to any increase in sales. While orde
files at tho mills have been reduced to
an averago equaling twenty days'
production at tho present rate, stocks
are low and broken, and it is likely
tht retailers who postpone their buy
ing to the lust minute will encounter
considerable difficulty In securing
their requirements.
