THE OLD HOME TOWN By Stanley J't;i.N I0SS or JOY: Thou will shew inn I lie path of life: In thy pres enci' Is fulin-sn of Joy; at thy right liand there are pleasures for ever more I 'Kill in 1:11. Our Youngsters Of course things arc not like they used to be, muse many adults of today, and then they proceed to tell how children did when they were youiitf. In many instances their argument i good, and probably children of today have become a little for ward, shaking off the reticent modesty of old. Uut the young ster of today is to be reckoned with in other lines. Parents may not have done this and that, for which they hold an inward pride, but those same parents never learned half as quickly at school, never advanced in comparison with children of today, and never possessed the wisdom and ability to do things at similar a;e of present-day youngsters. For instance, I.a Grande high school could very properly have the big km fire and butcher the fatted calf over the fact that her students took fiist, second and third honors in tlu state-wide American Legion essay contest, while last year "Lis Grande students took first honor in the same annual event. In addition to these, honors it was La Grande high schoo1 . pupils who tftok first honors in the essay contest con ducted by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution And still added to these laurels La Grande debating team cleaned up the Eastern Oregon school debatcis last season. Don't overlook the fact that these events showed severe com petition and that high school students all over Oregon worked and' worked hard for the honors, plainly telling of an efficiency in La Grande's schools that is most admirable. So, when we think of the present-day youngster as not beinj what mother or father was when young, bear in mind this cro has a lot of merit and ability which the past few years has de velopcd to a high state, and instead of bearing down in the wron; way, take the child to your bosom and join him in rejoicing ovei the laurels claimed by his school, then direct his steps alonf the right pathway, and the result will be a 100 per cent winner ho-no-youceT (we'RS scum I M M irii "( IB WK5 Wtt't IPON -SEWER j,', rJ J I'SU "'K,a"Y1( 'L "V nmWA,, fill mm AUT SARAH PEA3CSY, LEADER Oh THE SOCIBTY PO "THE SUPPRESSION OF PIPE SMOKING COLLAPSED WHEN SHE REALIZED THE TWO PIPE SMOKNH DRUMMER? A Year Of Politics fFroin wawWur"111'' rilf6tJ01W'iiy ll6xt iNovcmli-JJio .Amer ican people may expect to bo gorged with politics. They may count on getting it for breakfast in the morning news columns for the noon repast wherever two or three arc gathered to .gether for dinner or supper from the evening paper or fro! loquacious table companions. And they may expect to get i . between meals and on into the night by print, radio or wo' 'of mouth. Politics will bo served smoking hot from the na tional headquarters of both parties and from the headquarter; of candidates. . Henceforth officeholders who desire to remain in office ma.' be relied upon to sandwich politics between their acts and utter uncos. This applies to legislative as well as other government;! activities. If anything done by the "ins" proves good, the "outs' may be counted on to prove it bad. If anything done by thosi in control prove bad, the opposition may be counted upon to male political capital out of it. In the coming session of congies: support of and opposition to legislation will largely be controlled by politics. Editorials From Over the Nation POLITICAL 01 WIIKN A MKAX MAX IHKS.
