Man of Strong Words
Wallace JlcConnaut of Portland is a man of strong words,
lie is one of the state's leading attorneys, and he hates Hiram
Johnson. JlcCamant, through a hunch given him by Johnny
Rand, when both sat as delegates in the Republican national
convention, nominated Calvin Coolidge for the vice presidency.
At least McCamaut put Coolidgo's name before the conven
tion and the nomination followed. Naturally, Coolidge feels
kindly toward iUcCamant, and it is claimed now he would like
to appoint him to a federal judgeship.
But Senator Johnson is the fly in the ointment. JicCani
p.nt used strong language against Johnson and somehow John
son is one of tho:; westerners who remembers. It will

No Worse Than She Is Painted
It seems that women are of many minds as to their little
sister, the flapper. The other day a feminine student of the
modem girl rated her as a little bit of "all right."
Now comes a woman mcniler of the Washington police force
who opines that girls between the ages of 12 and 20 are becom
ing more wayward and that the majority of them are traveling,
via cabaret life and cheap literature, toward unfitness for wife
hood and motherhood. l!ut presumably this last witness has
studied the girls from a close-up and it is common knowledge
that close-ups accentuate defects and blemishes and often create
unfair impressions of the subject.
The witness for the defense carries more conviction withj '
